Lady Dutch fall to Bradford 58-39 in 9-AAA title game

CLARION - The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch lost to the Bradford Lady Owls by a 58-39 score Saturday afternoon in the District 9-AAA championship game played at Clarion University.
The Lady Dutch were outscored by a 15-2 margin in the first eight minutes of play. The Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Owls 29-26 in the second and third periods but Bradford scored 17 to St. Marys’ eight points in the fourth quarter.
“We played two quarters of this game. You can’t come out and only play two quarters of basketball at this time of the year,” said St. Marys coach Leona Hoohuli.
“We were able to get a run on them early in the second half,” said the coach as the Lady Dutch closed the Bradford lead to six, 37-31, with 3:12 left in the period.
“We made it to the District 9-AAA finals and I am proud of the girls,” added coach Hoohuli.
The Lady Dutch were led offensively by Adair Gennocro with 20 points on seven field goals and a six for six night from the foul line. Kiana Hoohuli added seven points.
Bradford placed three players in double figures led by Alex Vinelli with 21 points on nine field goals and a three for seven night from the foul line. Emily Marshall scored 17 points on seven field goals and a three for five night from the foul line. Haley Vinelli scored 12 points on five field goals and a two for two night from the foul line.
Bradford opened the contest by going on an 11-0 run. Marshall had nine of Bradford’s 11 points. A field goal by Sloan Foster put the Lady Dutch on the board with 1:08 left in the period. Haley Vinelli scored the last four points of the quarter as Bradford led 15-2 at the end of the first period.
Alex Vinelli scored the opening points of the second period. Gennocro sank two foul shots, 17-4. Vinelli scored again before Gennocro hit a field goal and Hoohuli added two foul shots. Vinelli scored two more buckets giving Bradford the 23-8 lead. Jenna Anderson hit a three for the Lady Dutch, 23-11. Vinelli scored again for Bradford with Anderson connecting on another three, 25-14. Haley Vinelli and Gennocro traded buckets. They then traded foul shots, 29-18. Hoohuli scored on a putback to cut the Bradford lead to 29-20 at the half.
Hoohuli hit a three to open the second half, 29-23. Haley Vinelli scored for Bradford. Gennocro and Foster scored for the Lady Dutch, 32-27. Marshall converted a three-point play, 35-27. Gennocro and Alex Vinelli traded buckets, 37-29. Gennocro cut the Bradford lead to 37-31 with a field goal at the 3:12 mark. Bradford added two field goals to lead 41-31 at the end of three quarters.
Bradford scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to lead 51-31 with 4:41 left in the game. Gennocro sank two foul shots at the 4:21 mark, 51-33. In the closing minutes, Bradford outscored St. Marys 7-6 in the closing minutes to win the game 59-38.

Game notes
The Lady Dutch are now 11-13 on the year.

St. Marys will enter the PIAA Class AAA tournament on Tuesday when they travel to McDonald to take on the South Fayette Lady Lion squad at 7 p.m. South Fayette is the sixth seed team out of District 7.

Both teams had 33 rebounds in the contest. Gennocro led St. Marys with 11. Marshall had nine and Haley Vinelli had eight to lead Bradford.

The Lady Dutch shot 14 for 49 for 28 percent while Bradford shot 24 for 50 for 48 percent.
