The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch remained perfect on the young season with a 70-41 victory over the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Dutch opened a 24-6 lead after the first eight minutes of play and never looked back. They placed three players in double figures, led by Kayla Hoohuliâ€™s 5 points on three twos, two threes and a three-for-three night from the foul line. Adair Gennocro added 13 points on five twos and a three. Jenna Anderson scored 11 points on four twos and a three, while Shelby Zomcik added nine points.
DuBois Central was led by Lauresa Gulvas with 12 points on five field goals and a two-for-two night from the foul line. Megan Witherow scored 10 points on four field goals and a two-for-two night from the foul line. Miller Hopkins added nine points.
â€śI thought we played well defensively,â€ť said Lady Dutch coach Bob Swanson.
â€śKiana (Hoohuli) set the tone tonight when she hit a three and then came back to make a steal. Kayla (Hoohuli) had 11 rebounds, 10 steals and nine assists to go along with her 15 points, which is a nice night.
â€śThe younger kids came along tonight. I was happy with the way we played overall.â€ť
Kiana Hoohuli opened the contest with a three and Anderson added two twos as St. Marys went up 7-0. Alyssa Marchioni scored for DCC before the Lady Dutch went on a 14-0 run to take a 21-2 lead with 1:45 left in the first period. Kayla Hoohuli had five points, Anderson three, and Mandy Gerarge and Kiana Hoohuli two each in the run. Megan Witherow scored for DCC before Gennocro hit a three. Hopkins closed out the scoring in the first period with St. Marys on top 24-6.
Kayla Hoohuli hit a three to open the second period. Witherow and Hopkins made it 27-10. Gennocro hit a two, as did Kayla Hoohuli, 31-10. Gulvas scored for the Lady Cardinals before Zomcik scored on a putback. Gulvas made it 33-14 with a bucket. Kayla Hoohuli converted a three-point play and Sloan Foster added a two, 40-14. DuBois made it 40-16 before Kayla Hoohuli made it 42-16 with a bucket with three seconds left in the half.
The third period was a rather close affair, as the Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Cardinals 14-13 to take a 56-29 lead with eight minutes remaining. Anderson and Gennocro led St. Marys with four points each, while Hopkins led DCC with five points.
The Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Cardinals 14-12 in the fourth quarter to win the game 70-41. Zomcik paced St. Marys with seven points, while Foster added five points. Witherow led DCC with four points.
The Lady Dutch are now 6-0 on the season. They return to action next Wednesday in the first round of the Elk County Girlsâ€™ Holiday Tournament.
Kayla Hoohuli was recognized in pre-game ceremonies for reaching the 2,000 career point plateau against Cameron County on Dec. 14.

The St. Marys junior varsity squad lost a 44-36 contest to the Lady Cardinals.
DCC took a 12-5 first-quarter lead and outscored St. Marys 14-13 to take a 26-18 halftime lead.
The third period saw DuBois Central outscore the Lady Dutch 14-6. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Dutch came back to outscore DCC 12-4, making the final score 44-36 in favor of DuBois Central.
