Smethport scored the only goal in Wednesday afternoon's girls' soccer match at the SMAHS soccer field; however, it was the Lady Dutch who came away with the 1-0 win.
"We lost to them the first time, so getting a little revenge was nice," said SMA coach Dr. Bob Schmidt. "[They were] some pretty well-matched teams and we've continued to improve. We had a lot of good action up front with Aspyn Wolff, Holly Shields, and Caley Keister, and then in the back with Mia Keener and Shannon Bridges, as well as Haley McGowan. It was a good team effort and a nice way to finish the season."
The only goal of the match came with 33:18 remaining in the first half as SMA's Holly Shields took a shot. While the ball was stopped short of the net, a Smethport player attempted to clear it but instead ended up sending it backward into the goal. The own goal gave the Lady Dutch a 1-0 lead that they would maintain for the rest of the contest.
In the first half, St. Marys outshot Smethport 9-4.
St. Marys dominated possession of the ball in the second half, coming close on several shots but never getting the ball past the Smethport keeper. St. Marys outshot Smethport 16-2. The Lady Dutch also had three corner kicks.
The game was the final match for seniors Lauren Challingsworth, Mia Keener and Mackenzie Schatz.
The Lady Dutch finished the season with a 3-14-1 record.
