The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team raised their record to 3-1 with a 13-0, five-inning victory over the Ridgway Lady Elkers Thursday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.
Rachel Ginther of the Lady Dutch threw a one-hitter as she faced 16 batters, striking out nine and giving up a single to the first batter she faced, Jenni Thomas.
Taylor Roseto started on the mound for Ridgway and worked one inning, giving up one hit, walking three and striking out one. Jenna Hoffman worked three innings, giving up five hits and walking four.
“After yesterday’s game, it was nice to get a win,” said St. Marys coach Manny Gerarge, referring to the 2-1 loss to Punxsy Wednesday. “We were able to capitalize on some of their mental mistakes. I’d like to see better hitting, but we did what we had to do.
“We have a big week coming up, as we are at Hollidaysburg Tuesday, at Brookville Wednesday and have Moniteau at home Saturday.”
“Ridgway came to play and it showed. They didn’t give up and kept playing the whole game,” added Gerarge.
The Lady Dutch had six hits in the contest, led by Raelyn Cunningham’s three singles. Erica Sorg, Rachel Ginther and Mia Keener also singled.
“They have a tough pitcher (Ginther) and she threw a nearly perfect game,” said Ridgway coach Gary Gerber II.
“We’re trying to get our pitcher back. She worked the first inning and we took her out,” said Gerber, referring to Taylor Roseto, who is coming off an injury.
“We put more balls in play than we did the first time we played them. But errors killed us and you can’t do that against a good team like St. Marys and a pitcher like Ginther.”
Thomas led off the top of the first with a single to right field. She was left stranded as the next three batters went down in order. In the home half of the inning, Kali Quagliani drew a walk with one out. Ginther reached base on a fielder’s choice. Quagliani and courtesy runner Ashlee Johnston moved up a base on a passed ball. Hayley McGowan walked and a sacrifice fly to right by Keener scored Quagliani. A single by Cunningham scored both Johnston and McGowan. Cunningham moved to second and third on passed balls and scored on a throwing error as St. Marys led 4-0.
The Lady Elkers went down in order in the top of the second inning. Savanah Krivonyak reached base on an error to open the home half of the second inning. Krivonyak stole second and Sorg singled, scoring Krivonyak. Quagliani reached base on an error. Ginther reached base on an error, scoring Sorg. Quagliani scored on an infield out. A single by Keener scored Johnston. Cunningham singled, sending Keener to third, then stole second. Amber Gerarge reached base on an error, enabling both Keener and Cunningham to score as St. Marys added six runs to their total, 10-0.
Ginther struck out the side in the third inning. In the home half of the inning, McGowan reached base on an error with two outs. Keener walked and Cunningham singled, scoring courtesy runner Jackie Lenze as St. Marys led 11-0 after three innings.
The top of the fourth saw Ginther strike out the side. With one out in the home half of the inning, Krivonyak walked and moved to second and third on wild pitches. Sorg walked and stole second. Krivonyak scored on a comebacker to the mound. A single by Ginther scored Sorg as St. Marys took the 13-0 lead.
The top of the fifth saw two ground outs and a fly ball for Ridgway end the game with St. Marys on top 13-0.
The Lady Dutch will travel to Hollidaysburg next Tuesday for a 4 p.m. contest.
The Lady Elkers, now 0-5 on the year, will travel to Johnsonburg next Wednesday.
