The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball squad recorded a 6-1 win over the State College Lady Little Lions on Tuesday afternoon during a cool and breezy contest at the SMAHS softball field.
State College took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but St. Marys quickly rallied, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead. The Lady Dutch added two more runs in the second inning and one in the fourth and sixth innings in the victory.
"We hit the ball tonight and made some key bunts and moved runners when we had to," said St. Marys Area coach Manny Gerarge.
St. Marys had five hits in the contest: a triple and a pair of singles by Erica Sorg, and doubles by Kali Quagliani and Mia Keener.
State College had three hits: a pair of singles by Megan Robert and a single by Jess Henderson.
Rachel Ginther went the distance on the mound for St. Marys. In addition to the three hits, she walked one and struck out eight.
Michaela Rittenhouse started on the mound for State College, working three and one third innings and giving up four hits, walking two, and striking out one. Jess Henderson worked the final two and two thirds innings, giving up one hit, walking three, and striking out two.
"Our team played solid defense, and it was a good all-around team win," Gerarge said. "I couldn't be happier with the way the girls played."
Cory Marfitt started things off for State College by reaching base on an error and advancing to second on a single by Megan Robert. Both runners picked up another base as Sharayah Simco was thrown out at first on a fielder's choice. Jess Henderson brought about the second out for the Lady Little Lions as she was unable to beat the throw to first; however, Marfitt was able to score on the play, allowing State College to take their only lead of the contest. Hannah Mazzocchi walked to give State College another base runner, but Hope Guthoff was out at first to end the top half of the inning with State College holding a slim 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, the Lady Dutch took advantage of their first chance to put runs on the board. Erica Sorg singled and scored on a double by Kali Quagliani to tie the game at 1-all. With two outs, Mia Keener also doubled, scoring Quagliani and putting St. Marys on top 2-1.
State College's batters went down in order in the top of the second inning. St. Mary went right back to work in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, Taylor Bellina reached base on an error. Bellina was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice that saw Savanah Krivonyak make it to first. A triple by Sorg scored Krivonyak, and Sorg later scored on a passed ball, extending St. Marys' lead to 4-1.
Neither team scored in the third inning, though State College was able to get a runner on base.
The Lady Little Lions went down in order in the top of the fourth. The Lady Dutch recorded another run in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, Bellina reached base on an error and advanced as Krivonyak walked. Both runners advanced again as Sorg singled to load the bases. Quagliani walked, allowing Bellina to score and make St. Marys' lead 5-1. State College then ended the threat with a double play that saw Krivonyak thrown out at home and batter Ginther out at first.
Both teams went down in order in the fifth inning.
State College again had a runner single in the top of the sixth, but she was unable to advance. St. Marys put up their final run in the bottom of the inning. Amber Gerarge walked and advanced on an error that allowed Courtney Bankovich to reach first. Both advanced on a fielder's choice that saw Krivonyak thrown out at first. Sorg flied out to center field. After tagging up, Gerarge was able to beat the throw to home to make the score 6-1 in favor of St. Marys.
The Lady Little Lions went down in order in the top of the seventh to give St. Marys the 6-1 victory.
The Lady Dutch are now 6-1 and will travel to Altoona on Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
