The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team raised their record to 2-0 on the young season as they defeated the DuBois Area Lady Beavers by an 8-5 score Monday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.
The Lady Dutch took the early 5-0 lead after two innings, with DuBois scoring three runs in the third inning to cut the Lady Dutch lead to 5-3. St. Marys came up with three insurance runs in the fourth inning as they held on for the 8-5 win.
â€śWe took the early lead, but DuBois battled back,â€ť said St. Marys coach Manny Gerarge. â€śAll-around, we hit the ball well today and made the plays when we had to.â€ť
â€śIt was a good win under adverse conditions,â€ť said Gerarge, referring to the game played in 30-degree temperatures with a strong wind swirling around.
â€śRachel (Ginther) helped her own cause today and (catcher) Hayley (McGowan) threw out two runners,â€ť he said. â€śThe bottom line is that we hit the ball well today.â€ť
The St. Marys offense was led by Rachel Ginther, who went three-for-four with a double and two singles. Kali Quagliani had two singles, while Cassie Wonderling doubled. Erica Sorg, Mia Keener, Raelyn Cunningham, Taylor Bellina and Savanah Krivonyak all singled.
Ginther went the distance on the mound for the Lady Dutch, giving up 10 hits, walking three and striking out 13.
Samantha Kirk started on the mound for DuBois, going five innings and giving up 10 hits, walking two and striking out four. Rachel Henry worked one inning of relief, giving up one hit and striking out one.
DuBois stranded a runner in the top of the first inning. In the home half of the inning, Sorg drew a walk, with Quagliani getting a single. A double by Ginther scored both Sorg and Quagliani. Courtesy runner Courtney Bankovich went to third on a passed ball. With two outs, Cunningham reached base on an error, scoring Bankovich. A double by Wonderling scored Cunningham to give St. Marys the 4-0 lead.
Ginther struck out the side in the top of the second. Sorg led off the bottom of the second by reaching base on an error and going to second on the play. Quagliani singled but was caught stealing. McGowan reached base on an error, scoring Sorg and making the score 5-0.
DuBois made the score 5-3 on a three-run home run by Casey Wilcox. The Lady Dutch went down in order in their half of the inning. DuBois went down in order in the top of the fourth. In the home half of the inning, Krivonyak reached base on an infield hit. Sorg singled and both moved up a base on a passed ball. With one out, Ginther singled, scoring both Krivonyak and Sorg. With two outs, Keener singled, as did Cunningham. A walk to Wonderling scored courtesy runner Bankovich, giving St. Marys the 8-3 lead.
DuBois left two runners stranded in the fifth while the Lady Dutch went down in order in their half of the inning. DuBois scored a run in the top of the sixth inning on two hits and an error, cutting the St. Marys lead to 8-4. The Lady Dutch left a runner on base in their half of the inning.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Beavers scored a run on two hits and left two runners stranded as St. Marys won the game 8-5.
St. Marys, now 2-0 on the season, is off until next Wednesday when they play host to the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks at 4:15 p.m.

The Lady Dutch junior varsity squad raised their record to 2-0 with an 11-3 victory over the DuBois squad in seven innings.
Last Friday, the Lady Dutch defeated Ridgway by an 11-0 score in five innings.
The Lady Dutch junior varsity will host Punxsutawney next Wednesday at 4:15 p.m. at Benzinger Park.
