The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team knocked the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders from the ranks of the undefeated Friday afternoon as they handed the Lady Crusaders a 3-0 loss at Benzinger Park.
Through four innings, the game was a real pitchers’ duel between St. Marys Area’s Rachel Ginther and Elk County Catholic’s Taylor Schlimm. The Lady Dutch were able to score all of their runs in the top of the fifth inning on four hits, one of which was a two-run home run by Savanah Krivonyak.
Both pitchers went the distance for their respective teams. Ginther threw a three-hitter, striking out 13. Schlimm threw a five-hitter, striking out nine.
“For Sav (Krivonyak), that was her third game in a row with a home run,” said St. Marys coach Manny Gerarge. “Rachel (Ginther) threw great today. We had great defensive plays, especially that double play on the bunt.
“Elk Catholic is a quality team and it took us a few swings to get our timing down. It was a good team win. We executed when we had to.”
Leading the St. Marys offense was Savanah Krivonyak with a home run. Kali Quagliani had two singles, while Raelyn Cunningham doubled and Cassie Wonderling singled.
Taylor DaCanal had a triple for ECC, while Michelle Imbrogno and Taylor Schlimm both singled.
“It was a very good game between two good pitchers,” said ECCHS assistant coach Digger O’Dell. “St. Marys had three hits in the fifth inning that were line drives. They hit the ball very well.”
“Rachel Ginther and Taylor Schlimm both are good pitchers,” added O’Dell.
Schlimm struck out the side in the top half of the first inning, while Elk Catholic went down in order in their half of the inning.
The Lady Dutch stranded the lead-off runner in the top of the second, while Ginther struck out the side in the home half of the inning.
Both teams went down in order in the third inning. Again St. Marys got the lead-off runner on in the top of the fourth, but left Quagliani stranded after her lead-off single. Elk Catholic went down in order in the home half of the inning.
Cunningham led off the top of the fifth with a double. Wonderling followed with a single, scoring Cunningham. She moved to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Krivonyak hit a home run to left field, scoring Wonderling and giving St. Marys the 3-0 lead. The Lady Dutch did leave a runner stranded. Ginther struck out the side in the home half of the inning.
The Lady Dutch stranded a runner in the top of the sixth. In the home half of the inning, DaCanal led off with a triple. An attempted safety squeeze saw SMA’s third baseman Krivonyak throw out the batter to second baseman Quagliani covering first, who threw to catcher Hayley McGowan to get the runner at the plate and end the ECC threat.
St. Marys left a runner stranded in the top of the seventh as Erica Sorg was hit by a pitch. In the home half of the inning, Imbrogno singled with one out. With two outs, Schlimm singled but Ginther got the final out on a strikeout as the Lady Dutch won 3-0.
