The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team stayed perfect on the season as they defeated the Brookville Lady Raiders by a 63-39 score last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Dutch were able to break a close game open when midway through the second period and into the third period, they went on an 11-0 run, raising their lead from 19-17 to 30-17 before Brookville scored with 6:03 left in the third period.
The Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Raiders by a 39-22 margin in the final 16 minutes of play.
â€śBrookville has a nice ball club. The final score doesnâ€™t indicate how close the game was,â€ť said St. Marys coach Bob Swanson.
â€śI thought Kiana (Hoohuli) had a nice floor game tonight, and Rachel (Walker) turned in a nice game with nine rebounds and six points and did a good job defensively.
â€śKayla (Hoohuli) had another double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. She also had six steals and five blocks.â€ť
â€śI thought we played nice defense tonight,â€ť added the coach, who said his team begins a three-game series on the road Friday when they travel to Bradford.
The St. Marys offense was led by Kayla Hoohuli with 24 points on five twos, one three and an 11-for-13 night from the foul line. Kiana Hoohuli added 13 points on five field goals and a three-for-four night from the foul line.
Brookville was led by Emily Ferraro with 18 points on five field goals and an eight-for-nine night from the foul line. Lanae Newsome was next with eight points.
The first quarter opened with Adair Gennocro knocking down a three for St. Marys. Brookville scored the next six points to take the 6-3 lead with 5:22 left in the period. Kiana Hoohuli made one of two from the foul line, with Kayla Hoohuli hitting a field goal, 8-6. A three by Kayla Hoohuli gave the Lady Dutch a 9-8 lead. Kailyn Hill scored for Brookville, 10-9. Jenna Anderson scored on a putback for St. Marys, making the score 11-10 at the end of the first period.
Shelby Zomcik of the Lady Dutch and Ferraro traded buckets to open the second quarter. Buckets by Kiana Hoohuli and Walker gave St. Marys a 17-12 lead. Ferraro converted a three-point play before Walker and Newsome traded buckets as St. Marys led 19-17 with 3:46 left in the half. Kayla Hoohuli hit a two and a foul shot and Walker hit a field goal as St. Marys led 24-17 at the half.
The Lady Dutch went on an 8-2 run to open the third period, as Kayla Hoohuli scored all eight and Ferraro scored for Brookville. Ferraro hit a two and Alyssa Byerly sank a foul shot, 32-22. Kiana Hoohuli and Zomcik hit field goals, 36-22. Ferraro sank six straight foul shots, 36-28. The Lady Dutch closed out the third period with a 15-4 run to take a 51-30 lead into the final eight minutes. Kayla and Kiana Hoohuli had six points each in the run, while Anderson added a three.
Anderson hit another three to open the fourth quarter, 54-30. After Ferraro sank one of two foul shots, the Lady Dutch went on a 6-0 lead as Kiana and Kayla Hoohuli and Mandy Gerarge each scored a bucket, making the score 60-31 with 4:32 left in the game. The Lady Raiders outscored the Lady Dutch 8-3 in the closing minutes, but it wasnâ€™t enough to overcome the St. Marys lead, and the Lady Dutch won 63-39.
The Lady Dutch are now 8-0 on the season and 1-0 in District 9 League play.
St. Marys returns to District 9 League action on Friday when they travel to Bradford to take on the Lady Owls. Junior varsity action begins at 6 p.m., with the varsity to follow at 7:30 p.m.
