SMA squads sweep Bradford teams
ST. MARYS - It was a sweet victory for the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch swim team when they avenged an early-season two-point loss to the Bradford girls by a commanding 38 points on Thursday night at the SMAHS Natatorium. The SMA girls won the meet 109-71 after gaining momentum in the diving portion of the meet and finishing out the meet strong. The Dutchmen outscored the Owls 122-48, keeping their perfect season alive, while the Lady Dutch are now 4-3 for the season with two meets left in the regular season.
It wasn’t until the 50-yard freestyle race that the Lady Dutch captured their first win when Emma Daghir topped her own best time and came within .08 seconds of tying the school record with her 25.68 finish. This was followed by Maranda Leidwinger, Alette Kraknes and Lexi Hanes sweeping the diving event that finally put the Lady Dutch ahead.
The next win came from McAnany in the 500-yard freestyle, but a solid performance from Steph Buerk captured second place with a season-best time put some room in between the dueling squads.
Stebich followed suit by placing first in the 100-yard backstroke, with Rupprecht taking second. The final events resulted in wins by Proudfit in the 100-yard breaststroke, followed by the 400 freestyle relay of Stebich, Megan Bridges, Kraknes and Buerk.
“This was a total team effort tonight by the girls,” said SMA assistant coach Mary Secco. “The win wasn’t all about first places, it was the points underneath that really gave us a lift.”
Season-best performances were enjoyed by McAnany and Buerk in the 200 free; Daghir and Aubrey Weisner in the 50 free; Lexi Hanes in diving; Maura Keyes in the 100 fly; Daghir and Lexi Hanes in the 100 free; Buerk and Cassie Wonderling in the 500 free and Saige Leidwinger in the 100 breast.
Relay bests were from Stebich, Daghir, Rupprecht and Proudfit in the 200 medley relay and Daghir, Rupprecht, McAnany and Proudfit in the 200 free relay.
The Dutchmen took a different approach to their win, capturing all but two events in the entire meet.
Matt Hoffman gave his best performance in the 200-yard freestyle, capturing the first win for the boys. This was followed by Corey Koss’s best in the 200-yard individual medley, notching another first with Joey Ferragine’s second-place showing with a season-best time.
The Dutchmen squad of Tim Mosebarger, Jake Burns and Josh Reed swept the diving event, with Mosebarger coming out on top with a season-high 204 points.
The 100-yard butterfly event was won by Alex Renwick, while Matt Hoffman took the honors for the 100-yard freestyle with his best time. Ryan Struble finished right behind Hoffman in that race. Jeffrey Moore also placed first in the 500-yard freestyle.
After the 200-yard freestyle relay of Cotter, Hoffman, Renwick and Struble snagged an easy win, Corey Koss kept the momentum going by capturing the 100-yard backstroke, with Wes Challingsworth finishing second in a season-best time.
In the final individual event, Cotter won the 100-yard breaststroke and teammates Gideon Woelfel and Max Struble finished third and fourth, respectively, with best times.
In addition to top times attained, Ferragine qualified for the regional meet in the 50-yard freestyle and Max Struble in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The 400-yard freestyle relay of Corey Koss, Renwick, Ryan Struble and Cotter also won the final event.
“We saw some things tonight that we liked. Some good splits, time drops, solid performances,” said SMA head coach Mark DeMuro.
“We need to keep focused on our goals and we seem to be tracking in the right direction,” he added.
The team will travel to Clearfield on Monday, Feb. 13 for their last away dual meet of the season. The meet starts at 6 p.m.
