Lady Dutch volleyball advances to 9-AA final four

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball team advanced to the District 9 Class AA final four by defeating the Clearfield Lady Bisons 3-0 last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
St. Marys will join top-seeded Bradford, second seed Punxsy and third seed Karns City at Clarion Area High School Saturday to determine the District 9-AA volleyball champ.
The Lady Dutch defeated the Lady Bisons 25-17 in the first set, 25-11 in the second set and 25-10 in the third set to win the match 3-0.
“It was a good night for us,” said St. Marys coach Erica Vogt. “I was a little concerned that we might play down after the first set, but we settled down and played our game the rest of the night.”
“We still have some little things to work on for Saturday,” she added.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair, as neither team took control. St. Marys got the serve leading 13-11. With Abbey Cribbs serving, the Lady Dutch moved out to a 16-11 lead. She recorded two aces in that stretch. The teams traded sideouts as St. Marys maintained their lead. A kill by Chelsea Gaton gave St. Marys the serve, leading 21-14. With Taylor Bellina serving, the Lady Dutch went up 23-14. Clearfield closed to 23-17. A kill by Sami Hanes gave St. Marys the serve back, 24-17. With Gaton serving, Taylor Schutz was able to get a kill to give St. Marys the 25-17 win.
The second set saw St. Marys get the serve, leading 2-1. With Cribbs serving, St. Marys went up 7-1. Cribbs had three aces in that stretch. After Clearfield made the score 7-2, St. Marys got the serve back at 8-2. An ace by Schutz was followed by a ball out of bounds by Clearfield. Bellina followed with a kill, 11-2 before the Lady Bisons got the serve back. St. Marys held on to their nine-point lead. The Lady Dutch got the serve back, leading 17-8. With Hanes serving, the Lady Dutch went up 20-7 on an ace. The teams traded sideouts. St. Marys got the serve back at 24-11. With Courtney Bankovich serving, Hanes got a kill, giving St. Marys the 25-11 victory.
The third set was tied at 1-1 when Cribbs began serving for St. Marys. She started out with an ace, her first of four in the stretch that saw the Lady Dutch open an 11-1 lead. Bellina also had a kill in that stretch. St. Marys moved out to a 16-6 lead when they got the serve back. Gaton recorded an ace, 17-6, with Clearfield being called for four hits, 18-6. A kill by Schutz made it 19-6. Another ball out of bounds by Clearfield was followed by a Gaton ace to make it 21-6. The Lady Dutch would go on to win the set 25-10, giving them the 3-0 match victory.
Abbey Cribbs led St. Marys with 20 service points, while Taylor Schutz had 10 kills.
St. Marys will enter the final four with a 9-8 record.

9:15 a.m. - Punxsutawney vs. Karns City
10:30 a.m. - Bradford vs. St. Marys
11:30 a.m. - Punxsutawney vs. St. Marys
12:30 p.m. - Bradford vs. Karns City
1:30 p.m. - Karns City vs. St. Marys
2:30 p.m. - Bradford vs. Punxsutawney
