The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball team handed the DuBois Area Lady Beavers a 3-1 loss Tuesday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Dutch took the first game by a 25-16 score. DuBois evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 win in the second game. The Lady Dutch won the third game 25-21 and the fourth game 25-16 to win the match.
“Chelsie Gaton was our player of the game with 11 kills and 14 service points. She also blocked well,” said St. Marys coach Erica Vogt.
“Abbey Cribbs is hitting the ball well. She pounded it down tonight. Taylor Schutz did a good job of blocking and hitting. Overall everybody did really well. I was happy with the way they adjusted tonight. They didn’t have that look of anxiety on their faces. Hopefully they got it out of their system,” said the coach.
In the first set, the two teams went back and forth, with the score tied for most of that time. With the score tied at 16-all and Gaton serving, Taylor Bellina got a kill. Gaton then had three aces. Two DuBois hits out of bounds made the score 23-16. Gaton would close out the game with two aces, giving St. Marys the 25-16 win.
The second game was tied at 13-all when DuBois went on a run to take a 21-14 lead. They would go on to win the set 25-20 to even the match at one set each.
The third game was a repeat of the first two, as it was close throughout. With DuBois up 18-17, St. Marys got the serve back, with Gaton doing the honors. Bellina’s kill made it 18-all. DuBois hit the ball out of bounds on the next few serves as the Lady Dutch went up 22-19. St. Marys maintained a three-point lead until Cribbs got a kill, giving St. Marys the 25-21 win and the 2-1 edge in sets.
The fourth set saw DuBois take a 7-5 lead when Gaton came up to serve for St. Marys. She started out with an ace followed by a kill by Bellina. Another ace was followed by a Sami Hanes kill. An ace by Gaton made the score 10-7 before the Lady Dutch were called for a net violation. The Lady Dutch got the serve back up 13-9. With Bellina serving, Kayla Nussbaum got a kill. An ace was followed by a Taylor Schutz kill. A carry on DuBois made the score 17-9. The Lady Dutch would take an 18-9 lead before giving up the serve. Later a kill by Gaton made the score 20-13. With Lauren Dalessandro serving, Cribbs got a kill. The teams then traded serves as the Lady Dutch led 24-16. Gaton served an ace to give St. Marys the win 25-16.
The St. Marys junior varsity squad won in three games.
The Lady Dutch, now 4-3 on the season, will return to action Thursday when they host the Brookville Lady Raiders. Junior varsity action starts at 6 p.m., with the varsity to follow.
