Over 100 area residents volunteered for the American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study, the third-ever of its kind conducted nationwide. The study was held inside the Sacred Heart Parish Center in St. Marys on Sept. 11 and 12. In order to be eligible to participate in the study, volunteers needed to be between 30 and 65 years old, had never been diagnosed with cancer and be willing to make a commitment to participate in a 20-year study by completing periodic follow-up surveys at home. Volunteers filled out a lengthy survey prior to their appointment, where they had their waist measurement and a small blood sample taken.
