South St. Marys Street Elementary School teachers recently hosted a Literacy Night Workshop where they provided parents with new ideas to help them utilize early reading strategies with their children.
A total of 13 teachers, including those from kindergarten and first grades, along with a reading specialist, learning support teacher and speech pathologist, gathered with parents inside the school cafeteria where six stations were set up, each focusing on a different topic.
"The stations focused on writing, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension," said Heather Hanes, kindergarten teacher. "We taught parents how we teach our reading and writing curriculum and gave materials for the parents to take home."
This is the fifth year for the event, which was sponsored by the SSMSE Parents and Teacher Organization (PTO).
