If you are determined to lose weight during this year's resolution season, you will be happy to know there are many local options to meet your needs. Whether you are looking to lose 10 or 100 pounds, there are local businesses and services ready to help you on your way.
A good place to start might be Elk Regional Health Center (ERHC). Anyone can call (814) 788-8517 to find information on the services ERHC provides for weight loss and nutrition.
From Jan. 9 until March 12, ERHC is offering a class called "10 in 10" that will teach participants to lose weight with the power of 10. Participants can expect to lose that pesky 10 pounds they have been struggling with. One-on-one consultations are also available and will teach participants about their eating and exercise habits, along with setting goals and changing ingrained behaviors.
Kelly Schreiber, ERHC's dietician/ nutritionist, offers some sound advice for anyone attempting to lose weight after the new year.
"Work on portions and fill half your plate with veggies," Schreiber said. "Drinks with calories should be limited to three or less per day."
Another weight-loss option in the area is Inches Away Diet Center.
Inches Away Diet Center, located at 1406 Million Dollar Hwy., Kersey, has been in business for 15 years and works just like the big franchise diet centers. Patrons are offered 20 diets to choose from, all of which include foods registering low on the glycemic index, along with just the right amount of protein.
During the weight-loss season, Inches Away Diet Center is offering a $15 a month sign-up fee, and everyone who signs up will receive a $10 gas card. No strenuous exercise is necessary on the plan; clients are simply asked to walk if they are able.
Ridgway's YMCA offers something for everyone to get their new year fitness routine started. The YMCA, located at 34 North Broad St., is open from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. They offer a team body pump class, Zumba, water aerobics, Silver Sneakers on Saturday for older members, and three or four other cardio classes. The card room is equipped with air pressure weight machines, along with stair steppers, ellipticals, and stationary bikes. The weight room offers multiple pieces of equipment to work the entire body. The YMCA also has open swim hours every day, including an adult swim in the mornings and water aerobics in the mornings and evenings.
