Marvin J. "Mike" Smithbauer, 81, of 227 John Street, St. Marys, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys.
He was born September 11, 1929 in St. Marys, a son of the late Raymond and Lavina Engelhart Smithbauer.
On April 4, 1964 in St. Marys, he married Delores Neubert Renwick Smithbauer, who survives.
Mr. Smithbauer was a member of St. Mary's Church.Â He served in the Army as a corporal in the 28th Inï¬ntry division during the Korean War.Â He retired from Stackpole Carbon Company in 1991 after 32 years of service. He worked in maintenance as a journeyman, iron worker and boiler and system generator operator and was a member of the Quarter Century Club.Â
He was educated in St. Marys area schools and ï¬nished his education after he was discharged from the military. He was a life member of the Society of the 28th division and was also a life member of the American Legion and the B.P.O. Elks, where he had served as Exalted Ruler and was noted for presenting the eleven o'clock toast.Â He was also a member of the Moose, the National Riï¬e Association and the St. Marys Sportsmen's Club. He enjoyed being outdoors and fishing and hunting, especially spring gobbler. He mostly enjoyed traveling with his wife and their trips to Erie and Atlantic City. Most of all, he took great pride and pleasure in his family, and enjoyed spending time with them and attending family reunions and birthdays.
In addition to his wife of 47 years, he is survived by a daughter, Shirlee, Mrs. Wilbur Lewis, Weedville; two sons, Richard Renwick and his wife Betty, Emporium, and Allen Renwick and his wife Sandi, St. Marys; 13 grandchildren, Debbie Young, Patty Lewis, Judy (Marc) Reed, Amy (Jeff) Glass, Cindy Jones, Rhonda Renwick, Missy (Andy) Geyer, Dan (Inga) Lewis, David (Barb) Lewis, Craig (Anna) Lewis, Steve (Teasia) Levin, Rob (Darlene) Levin, and Brenda (Kirk) Whiting; 26 great-grandchildren; 5Â great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Carol, Mrs. Clarence "Sonny" Beimel, St. Marys, and Kristine, Mrs. Leo "Googs" Winters, St. Marys.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Lewis; a son-in-law, Elden Lewis; and a brother, Jim Smithbauer.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Marvin J. "Mike" Smithbauer will be celebrated at the St. Mary's Catholic Church, Church Street, St. Marys, on Saturday, August 27 at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Meinrad Lawson, O.S.B., as celebrant.
A military service will be conducted by the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail.Â Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the Lynch- Green Funeral Home, 151 N. Michael St., St. Marys, on Friday evening from 5-8 pm.
