Melvin F. "Sam" Nissel, 84, of 137 E. Condot Rd., St. Marys, died on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
He was born April 15, 1929 in St. Marys, son of the late Albert and Rose Distler Nissel. On Oct. 17, 1953 he married Louise Hathorn and she preceded him in death on June 4, 1981. On May 9, 1986, in St. Marys, he married Marjorie Anderson and she survives.
Mr. Nissel was a graduate of Central Catholic High School and of Providence College in Providence, R.I. He was a retired sales manager at Keystone Powdered Metal Product retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, a veteran of the Korean War having served in the U.S. Army, played four years of basketball at Providence College and was an avid Pirates and Steelers fan.
Besides his wife he is also survived by three daughters, Carol Lion and her husband Robert of St. Marys, Mary Bauer and her husband Shawn of St. Marys and Patricia Stauffer and her husband Michael of St. Marys; a son, Thomas Nissel and his wife Betsy of St. Marys; a step-daughter Sherry Anderson of Mountville, Pa.; a stepson, Brad Anderson of Kersey; five grandchildren, Megan Dellaquila, Kiel Nissel, Sarah Bauer, Lauren Bauer, Abbey Bauer; a step granddaughter, Amy Albright; and a sister, Erma Cuneo and her husband Clifford of Holland, MI.
In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann Nissel in infancy and by two brothers, Ronald Nissel and Dennis "Jake" Nissel.
There will be no visitation.
Family and friends of Melvin F. "Sam" Nissel are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Eric Vogt, OSB, pastor, as celebrant. Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
