Michael A. Carnovale, 55, of Orange, Calif., died at the Kaiser Permanente Hospital on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011.
He was born Feb. 23, 1956 in St. Marys, the son of Bruno A. Carnovale and the late Marlene Wolfel Carnovale. On June 15, 1991 at St. Patrickâ€™s Church in San Diego, Calif., he married Elva Lau, who survives.
Michael was a 1974 graduate of Cameron County High School and a graduate of Mansfield University with a degree in law enforcement and criminology. He was employed as a police officer in Atlantic City, N.J., and Denver, Colo., before joining the Marriott Hotel Corporation, where he worked in eight different cities over a period of 26 years. Most recently he worked in San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles and Dana Point, Calif., as hotel manager and director of security and loss prevention and an expert in the installation and maintenance of keyless-card lock, security camera and alarm systems. While at the Marriott Marquis in New York City, Mike received the Presidentâ€™s Award for resuscitating a young boy who nearly drowned in the hotel pool. At the Marriott-Anaheim Convention Center, many notable guests were hosted including presidents, presidential candidates, government and military leaders as well as foreign dignitaries, and Mike would meet with the local police and government officials to establish safety and security measures.
He loved gardening, cooking/baking, skiing and spending time with his family. He enjoyed sports and was a member of the wrestling and football team at Cameron County High School and played football for Mansfield University. He was an active member of St. Norbert Catholic Church in Orange, Calif., and a volunteer at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., and was involved in many community, professional and religious organizations.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Madeline, and a son, Alexander; his father, Bruno Carnovale of Emporium; four sisters, Debra (David) Gschwendtner of St. Marys, Maria (Dennis) DiBello of St. Leonard, Md., Kathleen Carnovale of Emporium, and Laurie (James) Horrocks of York; one brother, Frank (Paula) Carnovale of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; his mother-in-law, Thelma Lau of Walnut, Calif., and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
A vigil and rosary for Michael A. Carnovale were held on Oct. 17, 2011 at St. Norbertâ€™s and a Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at St. Norbertâ€™s with Father Patrick Rudolph officiating. Burial was at the Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Orange, Calif. A Memorial Mass for Michael A. Carnovale will be held at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Emporium on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011 at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Paul Siebert officiating, along with the Rev. Daniel Wolfel concelebrating.
