Market Street in downtown St. Marys was transformed into a dragstrip Saturday, with modified outhouses hurtling from one end to the other all as part of a fundraiser for multiple sclerosis (MS).
The third annual "Kick the Crap out of MS Outrageous Outhouse Race" saw seven teams competing. Cheered on by the throng of onlookers, the teams raced their mobile commodes two at a time from the north end of the street down to the checkered flag. This year's grand champion team was the "Thirsty Thursday Crew" made up of Bill McMillan, Justin Brem, and Luke Fritz.
Jessica Bauer, who along with Kevin O'Leary founded the event, has herself been living with MS since being diagnosed in 2003. Bauer said that the event aims to ensure that the money raised will benefit individuals with MS at the local level.
"We started our own not-for-profit because we wanted to keep the money local. We started this to help local people with MS," Bauer said.
Bauer said she is seeking letters from area residents with MS that detail "what they would use the money for."
