New president and VP elected at SMASD meeting
At Thursday's meeting of the St. Marys School District Board of Directors, a number of members were sworn into their new positions following the Nov. 8 Elk Co. municipal elections.Members were sworn in by interim president John Mulcahy: Pat Rezmerski was sworn in as school director of St. Marys Area Schools, Region One of Elk Co.,with a four-year term, John Mulcahy for the office of school director, Region Two of Elk Co., with a four-year term, Bob Luchini for the office of school director, Region 3 of Elk Co., with a four-year term; and Charles Liptak for the office of school director, Region 3 of Elk Co., with a four-year term. Jesse J. Azzato, who was elected for the office of school director, Region Four, with a four-year term, was not present at Thursday's meeting.For the position of board president, the nomination process saw two nods for John Mulcahy and Bob Luchini, respectively. In an individual vote, board members elected Luchini by a margin of five votes to three. For the position of vice president, the nomination process also saw two nods for John Mulcahy and Charles Liptak, respectively, with Liptak winning the individual vote five to three. Luchini then assumed the role of board president and presided over the duration of the meeting, during which Superintendent Ann Kearney discussed the Jan. 5, 2012 deadline by which the school board must compile its financial yearly report for the 2012-2013 fiscal year, as well as its proposed preliminary budget for that year. It is required that the school board either submit the report for public inspection or adopt a resolution stating its intent not to raise property taxes above the Act 1 index, which is 2.2 percent for the district in the 2012-2013 year.
