Nurses Study Club looking for new members
A professional and social organization for area nurses is looking for new members. The St. Marys Nurses Study Club has been in existence since 1940, and is comprised of active and retired nurses who are or have been employed by local hospitals, doctor's offices, home health services, nursing homes, state health services, the Peace Corps, schools and other organizations."The object of the club is to promote interest in the study of medical topics and nursing problems and to provide social entertainment and recreation for members of the group," said current club president Bev Rucki. The study club's 36 current members are all active or retired Registered Nurses (RNs), but Rucki said after realizing how many Licensed Practical Nurses are in the area, club members recently decided to extend invitations to join to LPNs, too. "It was brought to the club's attention that there are LPNs interested in joining the club. It was voted upon and all agreed that it would be a good positive move to include the LPNs in the study club," Rucki said. "These are professional nurses that many of us have worked with for years, and it will be wonderful to reacquaint with these nurses and at the same time, enlarge the club's membership." Meetings are generally held the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Pinecrest Manor. The club tries to get a guest speaker for each meeting to help promote interest in the study of medical topics and keep people up-to-date about medical advances, treatments and other issues. During the social portion of the meeting, they have light refreshments and get the opportunity to converse with fellow professionals. They also hold a dinner twice a year and go to memorial services to pay tribute to other medical professionals who have died. Anyone interested in joining the St. Marys Nurses Study Club may contact Bev Rucki at 814-834-7377 or attend one of the meetings. The next meeting will be held Wednesday, March 17. Guest speaker Becky Paulinellie, RN, will give a presentation on breast care services.
