The Elk County Commissioners have publicly endorsed the implementation of a Marcellus Shale impact fee on each unconventional gas well in Pennsylvania.
"We had met with Senator [Joe] Scarnati and we were voicing our concerns for the human service side of this and they're going to be hit with this Marcellus Shale and housing, that part could be problematic," said Elk County Commissioner June H. Sorg. "I know a lot of folks are concerned about that and other programs of interest.
"I felt that it was important to start supporting an impact fee because there are things that are going to happen to our county, as well as municipalities, and the money isn't going to be available. We felt it was important to get behind this."
Elk County Commissioner Ronald T. Beimel mirrored Sorg's concerns and indicated Tuesday that most gas companies seem to be receptive regarding the fee.
