Saturday marked a new era in Penn State football as new head coach Bill O'Brien led the Nittany Lions into Beaver Stadium, the first home opener without Joe Paterno since 1949. In a show of support and solidarity, 600 PSU student athletes from 31 varsity sports lined up with the Blue Band and cheerleaders to welcome the 2012 football team. All the athletes wore gray "One Team" T-shirts, a new mantra adopted by the university. For the first time ever the team's blue jerseys were adorned with individual player names on the back, a choice made by both players and coaches. A moment of silence was held for all victims of sexual abuse.
