Parking garage nearing completion

August 12, 2011

Pictured is a recent view of the construction taking place on the parking garage in downtown St. Marys. The garage is expected to be completed later this month. Photo by Mark Anderson.

Construction on the parking garage is near completion and City Manager Dave Greene recently indicated that he anticipates ownership of the facility being turned over to the city by the middle of this month.
At the most recent city council meeting, councilman Bob Roberts suggested that the city offer free parking in the garage for one month to help residents become acclimated to the new facility.
"[Offering parking free for the first month will] get people accustomed to going in there, trying it out, and seeing what's going on with it," Roberts said. "It might be a whole lot easier for them to become accustomed to it and then move on to however you're going to [charge for parking]."
Council members approved Roberts' motion; however, they stressed that the month of free parking applies only to the parking garage.

I would like to know where people who work in the city are supposed to park. I had to use a metered parking place with a two hour limit. I work alone and could not go out to feed the meter. The meter with 12 hour limit was occupied for almost an hour after I parked........ No ticket, though, thankfully!

Should park in the parking garage so there are parking spaces for the shoppers.

I hope there is a monthly report published about the usage of this garage.

I for one, would like to know where people who work in the city are supposed to park. The Depot Street parking lot is all metered now and the other places that were available had two hour time limits at 25 cents per hour!! There was a 12 hour time limit meter but the place was taken by a vehicle that stayed for about an hour after I parked. I work alone and cannot run out to feed a meter, nor do I care to. This is a great way to encourage people to work/shop in the city!!

I, too, hope to see reports of usage. While I will keep on openmind, I am skeptical that this facility will be of benefit to the community.

I don't think we are that far apart about the city government. Read all my posts. All I ever asked was for your specific solutions to what you are so openly condemming. So far by the way you have not published your manifesto. I am still waiting, your answers at best were vague, you'd make a good politician.
If you read my posts I never said I agree or disagree with you or council, except for the parking deck, and I think the majority find it a confusing if not wasteful use of funding. Where are they going to plow the snow that falls onto the open deck?
You on the other hand immediately assumed that I am against you because I questioned you. If you can't take questioning about your arguments than don't present the argument.

Vague Reasons????

No one I know thinks "outside the box" as well a Mr. Roberts. In my opinion, this is an excellent idea, and should go a long way in winning over parking garage patrons.

One of the BIGGEST BLUNDERS made by council of all time. I know, I know, CHANGER 77 and EYES WIDE OPEN will not agree as they AGREE with everything council does. But, ask around and see what other think.

Give it a chance, lets see the monthly usage numbers.

The garage may not fit your picture of downtown St. MArys but it may be just the ticket for others.

Remember whiners and complainers are always first to voice their opinion.

I don't think the garage is needed, I rarely go downtown for anything anymore, but maybe to others, like he folks at those apartments it will be a nice place to park their vehicles in the winter.

If I'am not mistaken, every residence in this community must have ample on property parking for the occupants. That is a zoning issue.
The City should not be providing "a nice place to park their vehicles" at the expense of the rest of us tax paying citizens. The parking garage didn't cost us anything, you say, wait until this law suit by the now defunk St. Marys Parking Authority is settled. It will cost us plenty in legal fees and a mega settlement.

I thought I had a command of the English language, thai\t is, until I ran into that word "Burrah". Couldn't even find it in the dictionary.
What about it Cosa? Is it an actual word, or did you mispell it?

Thanks,
Chuck
