Public schools across the nation, including those in the St. Marys Area School District, are planning a variety of activities this week in celebration of "American Education Week" (AEW) taking place from Nov. 13-19.
Sponsored by the National Education Association (NEA), American Education Week is "Celebrating 90 Years of Public Education" as its 2011 theme.
The event focuses on the nation's commitment to students and educators. The annual observance honors students' hard work to learn, recognizes the professionalism and dedication of teachers, support staff and other educators, thanks parents and community members who help students succeed and rededicates the community at large to quality public education for every student.
"SSMSES is planning a week of exciting activities celebrating American Education Week. The week was already kicked off by the taking of a group photo of the entire SSMSES student body and staff showing their pride in their school with students forming “SSM” in the middle," said Elaine Lee, enrichment teacher.
Monday kicked off the start of AEW, as was evident at SSMSE, where numerous windows were decorated commemorating public education. A banner was also placed outside of the school.
Fox Township Elementary is hosting a yearbook cover contest where students have the opportunity to design their school's yearbook cover. Each homeroom chooses a winner and all candidates' work is displayed in the school hallway. On Thursday, the entire student body will vote for their favorite artwork on Thursday. A winner will be chosen on Friday.
Tuesday is designated as Parents' Day, recognizing the important contribution of parents and guardians to the educational process. At Fox Twp. Elementary, they are honoring their support staff with small gifts, provided by the St. Marys Education Association (SMED) on Tuesday.
SSMSE will observe a similar event on Wednesday during their Education Support Professionals (ESP) Day. Tokens of appreciation will be distributed to tutors, aides, custodial, office and cafeteria staff.
