Punxsutawney Chucks edge Dutch wrestlers 34-30

The Punxsutawney Chuck wrestling squad handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen a 34-30 loss Wednesday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The match saw the Chucks open a 22-9 lead, only to see the Dutchmen come back to take a 24-22 lead with four matches remaining. Punxsy picked up two decisions and a pin to record the victory.
“The team didn’t get it done tonight. Punxsutawney wrestled to win,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra. “Punxsy had all the excuses, but they stepped up and got the job done - we didn’t.
“We’re on a five-match slide right now. We have to pull ourselves up by the boot straps.
“I think we hurt ourselves for seeds tonight.”
The match opened at 130 pounds when Neko Capella recorded a 24-11 major decision over Alex Coudriet, giving Punxsy the 4-0 lead. At 135 pounds, Dutchman Darren Lyon picked up an 8-2 decision over Caesar Maruca, making the score 4-3. The Dutch took the 9-4 lead when Sam Miller received a forfeit win at 140 pounds.
At 145 pounds, Nathan McGregor of the Chucks decisioned Allan Gursky 2-1. Duell Thompson of the Chucks decisioned Alex Feldbauer 10-3 at 152 pounds. At 160 pounds, Carl Langley of Punxsy pinned Michael Brennen at the 3:09 mark of their match. Punxsy’s Josh Neal pinned Alex Geitner at the 3:32 mark of their 171-pound match as the Chucks opened a 22-9 lead.
Dutchman Joe McLaughlin decisioned Tige Woodson 6-2 at 189 pounds, making it 22-12. At 215 pounds, Dutchman Jimmy Antonelli pinned Tyler Titus at the 1:22 mark of their match, making the score 22-18. Dutchman Kevin Hoy pinned Brenden Knarr at the 44-second mark, giving the Dutch the 24-22 lead.
Josh Shuckers of the Chucks decisioned Damien Wensel by a 4-0 score in their 103-pound match as Punxsy took a 25-24 lead. Joel Bowers of Punxsy decisioned Trenton Bowers 5-1 at the 112-pound match, giving Punxsy the 28-24 lead.
At 119 pounds, Dutchman Evan Smith pinned Chelsea Engeholm at the 1:30 mark of their match, as St. Marys took the 30-28 lead. At 125 pounds, Kody Young of the Chucks pinned Bill Gabor at the 1:06 mark of their match and the Chucks won by the 34-30 score.
St. Marys, now 5-9 on the season, will host the Cameron County Raiders on Saturday. Junior high action is set to begin at 11 a.m., with the varsity bouts to follow.
