DuBOIS – The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen boys' soccer team saw their season come to an end on Thursday evening as they were handed a 5-1 loss by the Punxsutawney Chucks in a D9 semifinal match played at the DuBois Area High School soccer field.
"The score doesn't really reflect on how close the game was," said SMA coach Russ Micale. "I thought we were out-played tonight, but we didn't play bad enough to lose 5-1. We ended the first half 1-0. It was a good half by both teams. We didn't win the 50-50 balls. They had a little more possession, that's why they had the goal. But that second half, we came right out and controlled the ball, had possession and were playing real good, and then they scored that goal and that was kind of the end of us really coming back. But after that the guys played tough. They never quit. We had our opportunities, it just didn't end up right."
The first half was a fairly defensive struggle between the two teams, with the Chucks heading into the half with a 1-0 advantage. The lone goal came 11:36 into the match as Punxsutawney's Ty Zimmerman put the ball past SMA keeper Brett Lanzel.
Aside from that one goal, Lanzel did a good job of stopping everything the Chucks shot at him during the first half. Just over midway through the half, he came out to try to get the ball, but was unable to do so. One of his teammates was able to deflect the ball as he rushed to get back into position. Lanzel then hit the next shot up in the air and over the top of the goal, coming up with a big save for the Dutchmen.
The second half saw both teams take a fairly equal number of shots, but the Chucks were able to make theirs count and add four more goals to stretch their lead and secure the victory.
Tyler Presloid got this started, putting a shot past Lanzel 6:49 into the second half to make the Chucks' lead 2-0. Shortly after that, St. Marys Area switched keepers, giving Josh Burns a chance in goal. Less than three minutes later, the Chucks made their lead 3-0 as Zimmerman scored his second goal of the night.
St. Marys' lone goal came at the 10:32 mark as Ethan Michelini scored to cut Punxsy's lead to 3-1.
At the 18:06 mark, Punxsutawney recorded their fourth goal as Tanner Evans headed the ball into the net past Burns to make the score 4-1. Shortly after that, the Dutch again switched keepers, with Lanzel once again defending the goal.
The Chucks added their final score of the night 19:33 into the second half as Lanzel came out to get the ball and Presloid was able to put a shot into the empty net, making the score 5-1 and sealing the victory for Punxsutawney.
Senior members of the St. Marys Area squad are Damien Wensel, Ethan Michelini, Michael Fox, Gideon Woelfel, Matt Hoffman, Scott Barber, Weston Challingsworth, and Evan Lepovetsky.
The Dutchmen finished with a final record of 9-10.
