The Punxsutawney Chucks scored with 11.6 seconds remaining as they edged the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch by a 21-20 score Friday night at Dutch Country Stadium.
In the final 5:47 of the contest the Chucks outscored the Dutchmen by a 15-8 margin to come up with the win.
Punxsy went up 13-12 with 5:47 left to play on a Garrett Zimmerman-to-Ceaser Maruca eight-yard pass play. The Dutch responded with an 11-play, 65-yard drive to take a 20-13 lead with 1:36 left in the game. Cody Baker scored from 16 yards out and Alex Coudriet added the key two-point PAT. However, the Chucks then drove 63 yards on 10 plays and a pass interference call to take a 21-20 lead as Zimmerman connected with Dakota Byers on a five-yard pass and a two-point PAT with 11.6 seconds left.
“That was a great football game between two evenly matched teams,” said St. Marys coach Joe Schlimm. “It was an exciting game for both teams. I am proud of the effort for the way we performed. We had some opportunities in the first half that we squandered.”
“We ran the ball well and we defended the run well but Garrett Zimmerman can throw the football,” said Schlimm. “We have a short week to get ready for Clarion Thursday night at Clarion.”
The St. Marys offense was led by Alex Feldbauer with 171 yards on 30 carries and two touchdowns. Cody Baker finished with 70 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown.
Zimmerman led the Punxsy offensive attack as he was 14 of 24 for 174 yards and three touchdowns. Christian Falgot was the leading rusher for Punxsy with 60 net yards on 17 carries. Alex Bevak caught five passes for 86 yards.
Punxsy took the opening kickoff and on the second play from scrimmage fumbled with Dutchman Colby Lenox recovering on the Punxsy 30-yard line. St. Marys got as far as the Chucks’ 22 before running out of downs. The Chucks ran four plays and punted the ball back to St. Marys.
The Dutch took over on the Punxsy 47. They were pushed back five yards on a motion penalty. Feldbauer broke free on a 33-yard run down to the Punxsy 19 on first down. Joe Luchini gained seven to the 12 for the Dutch. Feldbauer gained seven to the five on second down. On first and goal, Feldbauer went the final five yards as the Dutch led 6-0 with 5:57 left in the first quarter as the PAT failed.
Punxsy punted to St. Marys on their next possession. The Dutch got to the Chucks’ 39 as the first period ended. The Dutch moved down to the Punxsy 23 before turning the ball over via a fumble. The Chucks then drove to the Dutch 12-yard line, where the Dutch defense stiffened and took over on downs. The Punxsy drive was aided by a roughing-the-punter penalty.
The Dutchmen’s next possession was halted by an interception as the half ended with the Dutch on top 6-0.
The Dutch took over on their own 34 after the second-half kickoff. Luchini gained three on first down, with Feldbauer getting seven to the 44 and a first down. Baker gained 17 to the Punxsy 39. On second down, Feldbauer scored from 10 yards out as St. Marys led 12-0 with 6:38 left in the third quarter as the try for two failed.
The Chucks came back with a nine-play, 65-yard drive which resulted in a Zimmerman-to-Dakota Byers scoring pass, good for four yards. The try for two failed as the Dutch led 12-6 with 1:21 left in the third period.

Trevor Pearce kicked the PAT as the Chucks led 13-12.
The Dutch started from their own 35 with 5:39 left in the game. Feldbauer gained five to the 40 with Baker picking up four more on second down. Feldbauer got a first down at the 47. He carried the next four down, including a fourth-and-one with 3:11 left to give the Dutch the ball on the Punxsy 42. Baker gained six to the 36. He picked up 18 yards and a first down to the Punxsy 18. Feldbauer gained two to the 16. On second down, Baker powered his way into the endzone from 16 yards out as the Dutch led 18-13. Quarterback Alex Coudriet added the two-point PAT as the Dutch led 20-13 with 1:36 left.
Punxsy started on their own 37. Behind the passing of Zimmerman and a pass interference penalty on St. Marys, the Chucks had first-and-goal from the 10 with 38 seconds remaining. Zimmerman gained five yards on first down and spiked the ball on second down to stop the clock. On third down he hit Byers with a five-yard scoring pass, cutting the Dutch lead to 20-19.
