The Punxsutawney Lady Chucks softball team used a squeeze play in the top of the seventh inning to record the winning run as they edged the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch 2-1 Wednesday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.
Punxsy took the 1-0 lead in the top of the first, with the Lady Dutch scoring in the home half of the inning. Neither team scored the remainder of the game until the top half of the seventh, when Punxsy manufactured the winning run.
The game was a pitching duel between Rachel Ginther of the Lady Dutch and Randa Depp of the Lady Chucks. Both girls went the entire seven innings for their respective teams. Ginther gave up three hits, walking two and striking out 10. Depp gave up six hits and struck out 10.
“We hit the ball today but couldn’t string enough of them together at the right time,” said Lady Dutch head coach Manny Gerarge. “We left runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings.
“This was a quality fast-pitch softball game, a real pitchers’ duel,” said Gerarge. “We will learn from this loss. We have to work on a few things.”
The Lady Dutch were led offensively by Raelyn Cunningham with a double and a single. Hitting singles were Rachel Ginther, Hayley McGowan, Mia Keener and Savanah Krivonyak.

Krivonyak singled, sending Cunningham to third. Krivonyak stole second. However, St. Marys could not get the hit they needed as the next two batters went down in order.
