Punxsy records 42-36 D9 League win over Lady Dutch

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch suffered their third straight setback last night as the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks held off the Lady Dutch for a 42-36 District 9 League victory.
The Lady Chucks were able to lead by seven points at the end of the first period, 11 at halftime and six at the end of the third quarter.
St. Marys was able to come back to knot the game at 36 with 4:18 left but could not come up with the offense.
“We didn’t play well defensively tonight,” said St. Marys coach Leona Hoohuli. “We didn’t come to play four quarters. The girls just didn’t seem to be focused tonight.”
“Now we have to get ready for Elk Catholic on Saturday night,” she added.
Adair Gennocro led the Lady Dutch offense with 16 points on six field goals and a four-for-five night from the foul line. Rachel Krieg was next with six points.
Punxsy was led by Taylor Newsome with 15 points on three twos, two threes and a three-for-five night from the foul line. Jensen Constantino was next with seven points.
Gennocro gave the Lady Dutch the early 2-0 lead. A three by Ashley Reitz and a two by Emily Horner gave the Lady Chucks the 5-2 lead. Two foul shots by Kiana Hoohuli made the score 5-4. Alex Magill gave Punxsy the 7-4 lead before Gennocro converted two foul shots, 7-6. Punxsy went on a 7-0 run to lead 14-6 with 1:08 left. Sloan Foster scored for St. Marys, making the score 14-9. A field goal by Horner gave the Lady Chucks the 16-9 first-period lead.
Gennocro scored off a steal to cut the Punxsy lead to 16-11 at the 5:15 mark of the second quarter. A three by Magill made it 19-11 with 4:30 until the half. At the 3:30 mark, Magill sank one of t two foul shots, 20-11. Ally Fye made the score 22-11 with 3:03 left in the half. Gennocro hit a bucket and DeAnna Yost added a foul shot to make it 22-14. Taylor Newsome converted a three-point play, 25-14. Jensen Constantino scored for the Lady Chucks, 27-14. Two foul shots by SMA’s Rachel Krieg made the score 27-16 at the half.
Becky Krieg made one of two foul shots for St. Marys to start the scoring in the third period. She scored again 20 seconds later to make it 27-19 with 6:38 left in the period. Fye scored for Punxsy at the 5:38 mark. Gennocro scored with 3:43 left in the quarter for St. Marys, 29-21. A field goal by Jenna Anderson cut the Punxsy lead to 29-23. Newcome scored for the Lady Chucks, with Rachel Krieg scoring at the buzzer to make the score 33-27 in favor of Punxsy with one quarter left.
Constantino converted a three-point play to open the fourth quarter for the Lady Chucks. Gennocro sank two foul shots, then scored off a steal to make it 36-31. Anderson hit a three and Hoohuli scored on a putback to knot the game at 36 with 4:18 left in the game. Punxsy would score six more points in the closing minutes to win the game 42-36.

Game notes
The Lady Dutch are now 9-10 on the season. They are now 4-5 in District 9 League play.

The Lady Dutch return to action Saturday when they travel across town to take on the Elk Catholic Lady Crusaders in a District 9 League contest.

Last night was Elementary and Junior High Recognition Night for the Lady Dutch basketball program. The elementary players were recognized at halftime of the junior varsity game and the junior high players were recognized at halftime of the varsity contest.

The Lady Dutch junior varsity squad held off the Lady Chucks for a 35-33 victory.
St. Marys took a 9-6 first-period lead. They outscored the Lady Chucks 15-14 in the second quarter to lead 24-20 at the half.
St. Marys outscored Punxsy 7-6 in the third period. The Lady Chucks outscored the Lady Dutch 7-4 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough as St. Marys won 35-33.
