Renovations uncovered storied past

April 2, 2014

RIDGWAY – Recent renovations to the former assessment office in the Elk County Courthouse have uncovered glimpses of the county's long forgotten past.
The courthouse, reportedly completed in 1880, had a very different look inside the facility versus today's building.
"Back in the 1970s there were major renovations done to the courthouse and they tore out a Victorian hardwood winding staircase and they put in the aluminum and plastic steps, and in the 1970s it was all about energy efficiency and urban renewal," said Elk County Commissioner Dan Freeburg.
