The Ridgway Area School District held a special board meeting Tuesday afternoon to accept the resignation of Superintendent Dr. Tom Butler.

"I humbly submit my resignation as superintendent of schools of the Ridgway Area School District effective Aug. 8, 2011," Butler wrote in a letter submitted to the board. "This decision has been heart-wrenching for me and my family in many ways, but I am confident the school district is on the right course and I am equally confident that the path towards excellence is maintained.
"Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve the students and community of the Ridgway Area School District."
Butler accepted a position as superintendent at the Penn-Trafford Ã…rea School District in Harrison City.
The school board voted in favor of approving an Intermediate Unit [IU] Nine search for Butler's replacement and set a tentative timeline for the hiring process. Applications will be returned to the IU by June 30 and will be returned to the school district by July 7.
A special meeting to review the applications will be held on July 7 and initial interviews will start July 18.
