The Ridgway Lady Elkers volleyball team handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch a 3-0 setback last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Elkers won the first set 25-22. They took the second set 25-18 and won the match by taking the third set 25-23.
â€śI canâ€™t complain about how we played, but we just could not get anything going,â€ť said St. Marys coach Erica Vogt. â€śI know we can play solid when we play. We have to get it together for Districts. I know what they are capable of.
â€śThe game ball went to Kiana Hoohuli tonight, who played well coming off an injury.â€ť
In the first set, the teams traded sideouts. With Sami Hanes serving, St. Marys took a 5-1 lead with Chelsie Gaton getting two kills and Hoohuli getting one. Ridgway got the serve back trailing 5-2. With Ellie Woodford serving, Ridgway tied the set at 5-all with Nicole Breier getting a kill. The teams went back and forth. The set was tied at 22 when a St. Marys serve went out of bounds. With Erica Thorwart serving, the Lady Elkers won 25-22.
The second set saw Ridgway slip out to a 15-9 lead when St. Marys got the serve back. Hanes recorded two aces before hitting one out of bounds, 16-11. Ridgway maintained the five-point lead, getting the serve back at 22-17. With Maria Buhler serving, Breier got a kill and St. Marys hit the next three balls out of bounds, giving Ridgway the 25-18 win.
The third set of the night was again back and forth, with neither team taking more than a four-point advantage. Tied at 18 with the Lady Dutch serving, Hoohuli recorded a kill and Gaton recorded an ace. Ridgway got the serve back. With Buhler serving, the Lady Elkers took a 21-20 lead. A carry gave St. Marys the serve back. The Lady Dutch serve was short, giving Ridgway the 22-21 lead. A kill by SMAâ€™s Taylor Schutz tied the set at 22-22. A carry was called on Ridgway with a kill by Breier, making it 23-23. The Lady Elkers went on to win the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
â€śWe kinda slowed down a little bit tonight,â€ť said Ridgway coach Janet Redmond.
â€śWe have to get ready for Districts, but a win is a win,â€ť she added. â€śSarah McClain has really been consistent in her hitting lately. Now we have to regroup and refresh ourselves.â€ť
The St. Marys junior varsity squad defeated Ridgway by a 2-1 score.
St. Marys is now 7-7 on the year. They entertain the Johnsonburg Ramettes Thursday on Senior Night. Junior varsity action begins at 6 p.m., with the varsity match to follow.
