Ridgway wrestlers hand Dutch 40-24 setback

The Ridgway Elkers wrestling team handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch squad a 40-24 setback last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.Ridgway opened a 17-0 lead, only to see the Dutch battle back to close to within 25-24. However, Ridgway won the last three matches to win the match 40-24.“We took a couple of steps forward again tonight,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra. “Ridgway has been a quality team for some time, and this is just part of the growing process.“All the kids gave good fights tonight. Their (Ridgway) experience paid off in some matches.“We put ourselves in a position to win and it didn’t happen. We need to get better.” Ridgway took the early lead when Steve Mitchell recorded a 4-2 decision in overtime over Allan Gursky at 145 pounds. Jake Himes of the Elkers made the team score 7-0 when he recorded a 12-1 major decision over Josh Cameroni at 152 pounds. Ridgway increased their lead to 11-0 when D.J. Skraba recorded a 12-0 major decision over Michael Brennen. Seth Stahl made the score 17-0 when he pinned Kyle Wolfel at the 3:28 mark of their 171-pound match.The Dutchmen got on the board when Joe McLaughlin pinned Cortland Smith at the 3:19 mark of their 189-pound match. Jimmy Antonelli pinned Chad Quail at the 2:39 mark of their 215-pound match, cutting Ridgway’s lead to 17-12. At 285 pounds, Ridgway’s Jesse Sheasley recorded a 4-2 decision over Kevin Hoy, giving Ridgway the 20-12 lead.Dutchman Damien Wensel decisioned Cody Stahl 12-9 at 103 pounds, making the score 20-15. The Dutchmen took their only lead of the night when Trenton Bowers pinned Ricky J. Javier at the 1:59 mark of their 112-pound match. At 119 pounds, Ridgway’s Corey Bush recorded a 15-0 technical fall over Evan Smith at the 4:34 mark of their match.Dutchman Alex Coudriet cut the Ridgway lead to 25-24 when he recorded a 7-4 decision over Trevor Delhunty at 125 pounds. Dakota Dahler of the Elkers pinned Bill Gabor at the 3:25 mark of their 130-pound match, 31-24.At 135 pounds, Slade Horner pinned Tyler Yetzer at the 1:28 mark of their match, 37-24. In the final match of the night, Kyle Caggiano of the Elkers recorded a 4-2 decision over Sam Miller, making the final score 40-24 in favor of the Elkers.“St. Marys is a good-looking young team. Coach Surra is doing a good job,” said Ridgway coach Gary Gerber.“Our kids, after stumbling over DuBois, were more motivated tonight.
