Construction has recently been completed on a new road bordering the St. Marys Protestant Cemetery. The road runs from Washington Road through the cemetery, ending near Penn Road.
The road was one of the major projects for the Protestant Cemetery Association, which has been recently reorganized within the past year-and-a-half.
“The road is not a through road, as there is a gate installed at the top of the road,” explained Lisa Salter, association secretary and treasurer.
She noted that the cemetery’s upper road may be utilized for parking for those visiting the cemetery.
The total cost of the project was $10,000. Bids were advertised in June, with St. Marys Paving Company completing the project last Monday.
“We plan to apply for grants in order to seek funding. We work solely on donations,” Salter said.
The association also incurs expenses for the maintenance and upkeep on the road. Bids have recently gone out for winter maintenance and plowing.
Since the association’s reorganization, the four-member committee consisting of Mike Supon, chairman, Rick Werneth, Lisa Salter and Lisa Quinn, have updated cemetery information, including maps of graves.
In addition, they are looking to refurbish approximately 80 headstones, especially considering the cemetery dates back to the late 1800s.
The removal of several large trees is also being planned. Tyler Landscaping performs regular care of trimming and cutting within the property. The association also conducts spring and fall cleanups throughout the cemetery.
