Robert Don Carnes
Robert Don Carnes, 89, a resident of Pinecrest Manor, and formerly of Silver Creek Terrace and 249 Lawrence Street, died Saturday, July 27, at the Elk Regional Health Center. He was born on April 23, 1924 in Allegany, N.Y., son of the late Clell and Cora Shoemaker Randolph Carnes. He attended Olean area schools and resided in St. Marys since 1960.On August 6, 1949 he married Margaret K. Kahle, who survives. He was a professional roller skater and they were married at the Colosseum in Ceres, N.Y., on roller skates. He was a member of the Shiloh Presbyterian Church and was head of the ushers and served on the Board of Deacons. He also served on the Board of Session and the Board of Trustees and served as Treasurer and Financial Secretary of the Church. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Army in France.In 1960 he moved to St. Marys to operate the DeLullo’s Shoe Store and eventually purchased the business. He sold the business and went to work for the Department of Environmental Resources, Bureau of State Parks. Later, he transferred to the Department of Labor and Industry. In 1986 he retired but was soon called out of retirement in May of 1987 to work for the Fifty-Ninth Judicial District, Bureau of County Courts, Domestic Relations Section, as an Enforcement Officer. He eventually left this employment to work for the St. Marys Tax Service. He was also employed for a long period of time on a part-time basis for DePrator’s Beverage, Inc.He was an “Over Fifty Years” member of the George E. Wagner Lodge, #639, F. and A.M. and served as its Secretary since 1972. He was also a member of the Past Masters Club of the George E. Wagner Lodge, #639, F. and A.M. also serving as its Secretary. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Coudersport; A.A.O.N.M.S.-Jaffa Temple, Altoona, PA; Tri-County Shrine Club of Western Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees.He was a member of the Pennsylvania Allegany Valley Square and Round Dance Federation, Inc. serving on their Executive Board. He was a charter member of the Bells of St. Marys Square Dance Club, Inc. and founder of the Elk County Cloggers, Inc.He was an associate member of the American Vietnam Veterans Association, Bucktail Chapter, #720. He assisted with the “Moving Wall” project during its visit to St. Marys in 1997. He was also a life member of the VFW National Home.Bob was instrumental in bringing George Jones and Patsy Cline to the area. He also was a volunteer for the Hospital Resale Shop and the Meals-on-Wheels Program.In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Robert Dee Carnes and his wife Patricia of St. Marys; two grandchildren, Michele Weisner and Martin Weis; five great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by three sisters, Gay, Virginia and Frances; and by a brother William. He was the last member of his immediate family.Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service for Robert Don Carnes to be held in the Shiloh Presbyterian Church on Friday, August 2, at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Scott Wiest, Pastor, officiating. Full Military Rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail.
