Robert L. Perneski, M.D.

Robert L. Perneski, M.D., 87, of 1025 Johnsonburg Rd., St. Marys, died Monday, May 5, 2014 at Penn Highlands Elk in St. Marys after a brief illness.
He was born July 19, 1926 in Plymouth, son of the late Lewis and Helen Wargo Perneski.
On June 1, 1957, in the Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Harrisburg, he married Margaret E. "Peggy" Keane and she preceded him in death on Aug. 2, 2006.
He was a resident of St. Marys since 1965. He was a graduate of Hanover High School, Class of 1943, and was valedictorian of his class. He then served in the U.S. Army, then was a graduate of Wilkes College in Wilkes-Barre, and then graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.
Dr. Perneski was a member of the St. Mary's Church, a veteran of the army having served in World War II, member of the AMA, past president of the Elk County Medical Society, was an avid fisherman and hunter, and was a member of the St. Marys Sportsman Club.
He served as an orthopedic surgeon at the former Elk Regional Health Center for many years.
He is survived by two daughters, Ann Gahr and her husband Patrick of New Cumberland, Jane Millar of State College; a son, Bob Perneski and his wife Chris of St. Marys; four grandchildren, Tim Gahr, Sarah Gahr, Marta Millar, and Graham Millar; and by a sister-in-law, Marita Keane of St. Marys.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial for Robert L. Perneski, M.D., to be celebrated in the St. Mary's Church on Wednesday, May 7 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas More, OSB, pastor, as celebrant. Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery.
