Rose G. Newell, 90, of Raleigh, N.C. and formerly of St. Marys, died on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, N.C.
She was born May 8, 1922 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Eckert Buerk.
On Sept. 30, 1947 in St. Mary's Church, she married the late Mack L. Newell , who preceded her in death on Feb. 23, 2007 after nearly 60 years of marriage.
Mrs. Newell was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1940, and had been a member of St. Mary's Church.Â She had worked at St. Marys Carbon in the 1940s.Â After moving to Raleigh, she became a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Raleigh, where she also worked for many years.Â She enjoyed spending time with her church friends there as well.Â She then worked at the Spring Moor Retirement Home in Raleigh for a number of years.Â
She was a loving and devoted mother who had a very strong Catholic faith and was known to pray the Rosary and attend Mass daily.Â She enjoyed crossword puzzles and cooking and baking, especially cakes and cookies.
She is survived by four sons, Thomas Newell and his wife Linda of St. Marys, William Newell and his wife Carol of Raleigh, N.C., Richard Newell and his wife Vikki of Raleigh, N.C., and Ted Newell and his wife Kellie of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Mary Grace, Mrs. Jorge Lagomasino of Cary, N.C. and Kathleen, Mrs. Ron Bauer of Raleigh, N.C.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Chris Buerk and his wife Shirley of St. Marys; her special friend, Dorothy Jonczak of Raleigh, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jennifer Sandoval, on June 26, 2009; six brothers, Andrew, Edward, Carl, Philip, and Roman Buerk and John Buerk in infancy; and three sisters, Dorothy Reed, Mary Gier and Mary Buerk in infancy.
Relatives and friends of Rose G. Newell are invited to attend a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 325 Center St., St. Marys on Saturday, April 6, 2013Â at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Eric Vogt, O.S.B., as celebrant. A Mass of Christian Burial will also be celebrated on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Raleigh.Â
Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no visitation.
