SMA swim teams open regular season with victories
BROOKVILLE - The St. Marys Area High School swim and dive team had a very successful first regular meet of the season when they traveled to Brookville on Thursday evening. Both squads won their meets, with the Lady Dutch outpacing the Lady Raiders 115-33, while the Dutchmen scored 114 to the Raiders’ 40.Multiple Lady Dutch took first-place honors, including Lauren McAnany, who won the 200-yard freestyle; Kylee Proudfit in the 200-yard individual medley; Emma Daghir in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke; Maranda Leidwinger in diving; Michaela Rupprecht in the 100-yard butterfly; Saige Leidwinger in the 100-yard freestyle and Melinda Stebich in the 100-yard backstroke.The ladies’ 200-yard medley relay of Stebich, Daghir, Rupprecht and Proudfit also took top honors. Later in the evening, Daghir, Rupprecht, McAnany and Proudfit won the 200-yard freestyle relay. In the final event, McAnany, Cassie Wonderling, Saige Leidwinger and Stebich finished first in the non-scored 400 freestyle relay.“We had some great swims out of our girls tonight. They have been working real hard and it showed this evening,” said SMAHS head coach Mark DeMuro. “It’s still early, but we are seeing a lot of promise on that squad.”For the Dutchmen, Matt Hoffman took first in the 200-yard freestyle; Corey Koss in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard backstroke; Jake Burns in diving; Ryan Struble in the 100-yard freestyle and Jeffrey Moore in the 500-yard freestyle.In the last individual event of the meet, Dutchman Andrew Cotter broke his own Brookville pool record set back on Jan. 14, 2010 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Cotter previously held the record with a 1:01.69, and he beat that time by posting a 1:01.58.“It was nice to see Andrew break his own record and swim such a nice race, especially after having to sit out last year out with an injury,” said DeMuro. “This time also qualifies him for the YMCA Short Course Nationals, which is quite an honor.”The relays also delivered in that the Dutchmen won all three of their relays. The winning 200-yard medley relay consisted of Corey Koss, Cotter, Renwick and Ryan Struble, while the victorious 200-yard freestyle relay included Hoffman, Ryan Struble, Renwick and Cotter. The final 400 freestyle relay of Corey Koss, Hoffman, Moore and Cotter won their exhibition swim.“Tonight was an overall good night for the boys, with some nice time improvements, but we have some tough meets coming up that we have to stay on top of our game (for),” said DeMuro. “It was also great to see our divers in action, as we have a really strong contingent this year.”The St. Marys squads are back in action next Thursday, Jan. 19 against Bradford.
