The St. Marys Area track and field squads will be looking for improvement as the season progresses for both the Lady Dutch and Dutch squads.
Lady Dutch head coach Jamie Caskey feels that the strength of her team will be the veteran athletes.
“We have several school record holders on our team still. The record-holding girls’ 4x800m relay has not lost any members. We hope to keep improving on what we started last year,” Caskey said.
Returning letter winners for the Lady Dutch are seniors Brittany Orr, Megan Barber, Shelby Zomcik and Kayla Hoohuli, juniors Sloan Foster, Kristen Anderson and Chelsea Gregori and sophomores Adair Gennocro and Shannon Bridges.
“As always, the question marks are the new athletes. We have a few girls that are still not sure of their place on the team. The first few meets will be spent trying them in different areas to see where they will have the most success,” Caskey said. “We really want to focus on taking as many girls as possible to the District and state level of competition.”
As far as who the team to beat will be for the Lady Dutch, they are Class AAA this year after being Class AA for the last few years.
Members of the Lady Dutch squad are Kristen Anderson, Megan Barber, Karly Bish, Kelsey Bonifay, Shannon Bridges, Rebekah Caretti, Nicole Challingsworth, Abbey Cribbs, Sloan Foster, Adair Gennocro, Chelsea Gregori, Rebecca Hanes, Amanda Hansen, Kayla Hoohuli, Sam McCabe, Michelle Mecca, Amy Orr, Brittany Orr, Brianna Pontzer, Rachel Schreiber, Kiana Schatz, DeAnna Yost, Kaley Williams, Chanel Wolfel and Shelby Zomcik.
The Dutch squad will be under the direction of head coach Mark Caskey.
“We have a good group of kids. We have several great role models and leaders in the upperclassmen. We also have some very promising young athletes who work hard every day trying to better themselves,” he said.
The returning letter winners for the Dutch squad are seniors Justin Huey and Jonathan Prechtl, juniors Gideon Woelfel, Trenton Schreiber, Brian Merritt, Matt Hoffman and Jimmy Werner and sophomore Nathan McFadden.
“Our biggest question mark is going to be trying to move kids around to be competitive in all the event areas,” said Caskey.
“We have several goals this season. First and foremost is just for the kids to continue to improve. We are also hoping to be very competitive at the District meet and hopefully send some athletes to states.”
Members of the Dutch team are seniors Justin Huey, Jonathan Prechtl, Josh Rogers and Dylan Reigel; juniors Scott Barber, Weston Challingsworth, Sam Guido, Matt Hoffman, Brian Merritt, Trenton Schreiber, Jimmy Werner and Gideon Woelfel; sophomores Tyler Cuneo, Alec Foster, Nathan McFadden, Cyrus Mecca, Mitchell Ovell, Nicos Sette, Peter Timashenka and Clancy Wiesner; and freshmen Jordan Agosti, Josh Burns, Peter Casey, Christian Keller, Tyler Mancuso, Owen Schreiber and Zachary Shutters.
“It is hard to tell this early in the year who the teams to beat will be. I am sure all the teams in the District are going to be very competitive as they are each year,” added Caskey.
The track and field assistant coaches are Cindy Shuster, Bill Shuey and Rob Meyer.
