SMASD utility costs scrutinized at recent meeting

February 15, 2012

St. Marys Area School District superintendent Ann Kearney at Monday's meeting of the board of directors presented a utility cost and usage report, detailing the district's energy costs and consumption in each of its school buildings over the past three years.
In August of 2010 the board of directors approved a guaranteed energy savings contract, pursuant to Act 77, the Guaranteed Energy Savings Act. The SMASD entered into the energy savings contract with Johnson Controls who retrofitted lighting fixtures, installed insulation or "energy control for building envelopes," as well as new heating units. Kearney explained the policy has been successful in contributing to decreased energy consumption and costs throughout the district as detailed in the report.
