Smethport wrestlers edge Flying Dutchmen 37-32

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling squad suffered a tough 37-32 loss to the Smethport Hubbers Thursday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Hubbers were able to move out to an 18-0 lead. The Dutch battled back to cut the Hubber lead to 31-20. Dutchman Jimmy Antonelli picked up a pin at 215 and Kevin Hoy recorded a pin at 285 to give the Dutch the 32-31 lead. Unfortunately, Smethport picked up a forfeit win at 103 pounds to win the match.
“We just didn’t do the job tonight that we needed to do,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra. “We couldn’t overcome the bonus points.”
“Bill Gabor wrestled a nice bout tonight and Sam Miller wrestled well.
“The heavyweights have been doing the job all year and they did it again tonight.”
The match opened at 112 pounds, where Smethport’s Nate Schwab pinned Trenton Bowers at the 3:02 mark of their match. At 119 pounds, Karl Lightner of Smethport pinned Evan Smith at the 3:02 mark to give the Hubbers the 12-0 lead. At 125 pounds, Drew Burdick of the Hubbers pinned Alex Coudriet at the 5:19 mark, giving Smethport the 18-0 lead.
Bill Gabor put the Dutch on the board when he recorded a 7-4 decision over Drew Burdick at 130 pounds. At 135 pounds, Smethport’s Damien Kreckel got a takedown and three back points in the final 28 seconds to come away with a 7-5 decision.
Dutchman Sam Miller recorded an 11-0 major decision over Damien Kreckel at 140 pounds. Allan Gursky of the Dutch pinned Jordan Johnson at the 4:34 mark of their 145-pound match to cut the Smethport lead to 21-13. At 152 pounds, Kyle Freer of the Hubs got an 8-0 major decision over Alex Feldbauer, giving Smethport the 25-13 lead. At 160 pounds, Garrett Hoy of Smethport pinned Ben Cheatle at the 3:22 mark, giving Smethport the 31-13 lead.
At 171 pounds, Kyle Wolfel of St. Marys recorded an 8-2 decision over Josh Hallock, making the score 31-16. Joe McLaughlin of the Dutch recorded a 10-1 major decision over Tyler Miketish at 189 pounds, cutting the Smethport lead to 31-20.
Jimmy Antonelli of the Dutch pinned Tyler Buchholz at the 51-second mark of their 215-pound match, cutting Smethport’s lead to 31-26. At 285 pounds, Dutchman Kevin Hoy pinned Caleb Cooper at the 1:23 mark of their match to give the Dutch their first lead of the night, 32-31.
The lead was short-lived, as Smethport won by forfeit at 103 pounds to win the match 37-32.
The Dutch are now 5-7 on the year. They will return to action next Tuesday when they play host to State College.
