St. Marys 10/11 baseball stars rally for 15-14 victory

The St. Marys Little League Baseball 10/11 all-star squad rallied for a 15-14 victory over the Punxsutawney stars on an extremely warm Saturday afternoon at Memorial Park.
Going into the bottom of the sixth, St. Marys trailed 14-9. They were able to score six times in the home half of the sixth inning to pull out the victory.
With one out in the home half of the sixth inning, Matt Bellina walked. Special pinch runner Ryan Hepler moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Lucas Erich. Erich was able to go to second on the play. He advanced to third on a passed ball. Bryce O’Leary drew a walk. A single by Adam Piccolo scored both Erich and O’Leary. Piccolo wound up at third on the play. Jesse McKee walked. He never stopped at first base and easily stole second. A ground rule double by Alec Bittler scored both Piccolo and McKee, tying the game at 14. A walk-off ground rule double by Dan Wimer gave St. Marys the 15-14 victory.
St. Marys out-hit Punxsutawney by a 12-10 margin. Getting the hits for St. Marys were Alec Bittler and Hunter Cashmer, both with a home run and a double. Alex Fedus homered, while Dan Wimer had two doubles. Alex Breindel doubled. Lucas Erich and Adam Piccolo both had two singles.
Matt Bellina started on the mound for St. Marys, going 1 1/3 innings giving up five hits, walking three and striking out one. Alex Fedus worked 4 1/3 innings, giving up two hits, walking three and striking out one. Brady Schneider worked 1/3 of an inning, facing one batter and getting him to fly out. Derek Huey started on the mound for Punxsy and worked 2 1/3 innings, giving up one hit, walking one and striking out five. Dylan Ishman worked 1 1/3 innings, giving up six hits, walking one and striking out two. Logan Johnston worked 1 2/3 innings, giving up three hits, walking four and striking out one. Willie Hoover gave up one hit in facing one batter.
Punxsutawney left the bases loaded in the top half of the first inning. St. Marys left two men on base in their half of the inning. Punxsy scored six times on three hits and three errors in the top of the second inning to take the 6-0 lead. St. Marys stranded two in the home half of the inning.
Punxsy added five runs to their lead on three hits and an error to take an 11-0 lead. With one out in the home half of the inning, Wimer reached base on an error. He moved to second on a passed ball. With two outs, Hunter Cashmer hit a two-run home run to left field, cutting the Punxsy lead to 11-2.
Thanks to a double play, Punxsy only sent three batters to the plate in the top of the fourth inning. St. Marys scored five runs in the home half of the inning. With one out, Breindel doubled. A single by Piccolo scored Breindel, with Piccolo going to second on the play. Jesse McKee reached base on an error, scoring Piccolo. A two-run home run by Bittler scored McKee. With two outs, Fedus hit a solo home run as St. Marys cut the Punxsy lead to 11-7.
Punxsy went down in order in the fifth inning. In the home half of the inning, Piccolo reached base on a dropped third strike. He stole second. McKee walked and Bittler was hit by a pitch. A double by Wimer scored both Piccolo and McKee as St. Marys cut the Punxsy lead to 11-9.
In the top half of the sixth inning, Punxsy scored three runs on two hits and an error to take a 14-9 lead. In the home half of the inning, St. Marys scored six times on four hits to win the game 15-14.
St. Marys returns to action Wednesday when they meet the loser of tonight’s Warren at DuBois game. Wednesday’s game will be the final of the loser’s bracket.
