The St. Marys 11-12-year-old all-stars came from behind to beat the Ridgway all-stars by a 10-7 score Sunday afternoon at Memorial Park.
Ridgway was leading the contest 7-5 going into the top half of the sixth. St. Marys came up with five runs in that inning to record the 10-7 victory.
St. Marys is in action tonight at 6 p.m. against the loser of the Punxsutawney vs. DuBois game that was also played on Sunday. This will be the finals of the loserâ€™s bracket.
Jeff Wehler started on the mound for St. Marys on Sunday, going five innings, giving up six hits, walking two and striking out five. Pat Schlimm worked the final inning, giving up one hit and striking out two.
Neil MacDonald started on the mound for Ridgway and worked three innings, giving up six hits and striking out three. John Mitchell worked 2 1/3 innings of relief, giving up five hits and striking out one. Ben Ames worked 1/3 of an inning of relief, walking three. Drew Baumgratz worked 1/3 of an inning, giving up one hit.
St. Marys had 12 hits in the ball game. Brad Dippold had a double and two singles, while Jeff Wehler had a double and a single. Eric Gerber had three singles, Dan Stauffer two singles and Jordan Romain and Frank Singer one each.
Ridgway had seven hits in the game led by Ben Ames, who had a grand slam and a double. John Mitchell had a home run, while Josh Raubenstrauch had a ground rule double. Neil MacDonald, Justin Kasmierski and Joe Kucenski all singled.
St. Marys lost the coin toss and were the visitors. In the top half of the first inning, Dippold led off with a single. With one out, Wehler reached base on an error, sending Dippold to third. Stauffer singled to score Dippold and give St. Marys the 1-0 lead. With one out in the home half of the inning, MacDonald singled. A ground rule double by Raubenstrauch put runners on second and third. A sacrifice fly to center by Ames scored MacDonald. A home run by Mitchell scored Raubenstrauch to give Ridgway the 3-1 lead.
With one out in the top of the second, Singer singled. With two outs, Romain singled, scoring Singer, and moved to second on the play. A single by Dippold scored Romain, tying the game at 3-all. Wehler struck out the side in the home half of the inning.
In the top of the third, Wehler led off with a double. He moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a ground out as St. Marys took the 4-3 lead. Ridgway went down in order in their half of the inning.
The top of the fourth inning found St. Marys score when Romain reached base on a fielderâ€™s choice. A double by Dippold scored Romain to give St. Marys the 5-3 lead. Ridgway left a runner on base in their half of the inning.
St. Marys left two men on base in the top of the fifth. In the home half of the inning, Kucenski singled with one out. Drew Baumgratz drew a walk. MacDonald reached base on a fielderâ€™s choice, erasing Baumgratz. Raubenstrauch walked to load the bases. Ames then hit a grand slam to right center field, giving Ridgway the 7-5 lead after five complete innings.
Gerber led off the top of the sixth with a single for St. Marys. Romain reached base on an error. With one out, Pat Schlimm was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wehler singled to score Gerber. Romain was able to score on the play due to an overthrow at the plate, sending Schlimm to third and Wehler to second. Stauffer walked to load the bases. D.J. Mertz walked to score Schlimm. Mike Beimel reached base on a fielderâ€™s choice, allowing Wehler and Stauffer to score and giving St. Marys the 10-7 lead. Kasmierski led off the home half of the inning with a single, but he was left stranded as St. Marys stayed alive with the 10-7 victory.
Ridgway finished play in the District 10 Tournament with a 2-2 record.
