St. Marys Area swimmers split with Clearfield squads

HYDE - Swimming may seem like a sport of individual efforts, but that wasn’t the case when the St. Marys Area High School swim and dive team met the Clearfield Bisons on Monday night in Clearfield. The Dutchmen made a bold statement at the Robert L. Shearer Natatorium when they captured all three relays in a dramatic fashion in the hopes of keeping their undefeated season alive.
The Dutchmen defeated the Bisons 114--72, while the Lady Bisons downed the Lady Dutch 123-63.
It was the showdown of the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relays that grabbed everyone’s attention mid-meet.   Ryan Struble, Matt Hoffman and Alex Renwick hit the water against Clearfield’s finest Alex Fisher, Michael Spencer and Jacob Rollins. The Bisons had a slight advantage headed into the final leg with Wyatt Flanagan as their anchor. Andrew Cotter launched himself into the water, making up most of the difference with an excellent start, then overtook Flanagan to win the race by .37 seconds.
“We are very fortunate to have three very strong boys’ relays,” said SMA head coach Mark DeMuro.  “Usually a team can field one or two. For us to have the depth to be competitive in all three is huge.”
The first relay win came at the top of the meet when Corey Koss, Cotter, Renwick and Jeffrey Moore performed in the 200-yard medley relay. At the end of the meet, Ryan Struble, Corey Koss, Moore and Cotter added the final win of the evening, where the Dutchmen prevailed in all but four events.
Individually, the Dutchmen were led with first-place finishes by Cotter in the 50-yard freestyle, Kyle Pistner in diving, Renwick in the 100-yard butterfly, Moore in the 500-yard freestyle and Corey Koss in the 100-yard backstroke.
Top times for the season were recorded by Wes Challingsworth in the 200-yard freestyle, Joey Ferragine in the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley, Pistner in diving, Renwick in the 200-yard individual medley, Max Struble in the 100-yard breaststroke and Gideon Woelfel in the 100-yard butterfly.
The Lady Dutch had an impressive showing against an undefeated Lady Bisons squad but came up short.
The lone wins came from Emma Daghir in the 50-yard freestyle and Lauren McAnany in the 500-yard freestyle.
Kylee Proudfit took second with a strong performance in the 200-yard individual medley as well as the 100-yard breaststroke. Daghir also took second in the 100-yard freestyle, as did Maranda Leidwinger in diving.
Both the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays placed second. The relays consisted of Michaela Rupprecht, McAnany, Daghir and Proudfit.
Season bests were performed by Steph Buerk in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles, Alette Kraknes in the 50-yard freestyle, Maranda Leidwinger in diving and Cassie Wonderling in the 50- and 500-yard freestyles.
“Now that we are getting down to the end of the dual season, the team is working toward their goals for District 9 and regionals. They are definitely on target for the postseason,” said assistant coach Mary Secco.
With the win in Clearfield, the Dutchmen are 8-0 for the season. The Lady Dutch dropped to 4-4. The squads will celebrate Senior Night at their last home meet on Thursday beginning at 6 p.m. at the SMAHS Natatorium.
