St. Marys cross country teams fare well at Big Valley Invitational

The St. Marys Area cross country teams opened their seasons on Saturday by competing in the Big Valley Invitational held at Reedsville.The Dutchmen took fifth place with a total of 176 points. State College won the team title with 45 points, followed by Mifflin County 66, Altoona Area 78, Bellefonte 167 and St. Marys. There were a total of 12 teams represented in the boys’ AAA race.The Dutchmen were led by Gideon Woelfel’s third-place finish in a time of 16:41. He was followed by Alec Foster in 18th place in 17:52. K.O. Deyev placed 42nd in 19:14, with Dylan Shields taking 51st in 19:40 and Nathan McFadden 62nd in 20:57 to account for the Dutchmen’s points. Austin Frey completed the course in 21:16 and Mitchell O’Vell finished in 21:37.In the junior varsity boys’ race, Jordan Agosti of the Dutch placed 94th with a time of 23:07.The Lady Dutch placed third in the girls’ Class AA race behind first-place Lewisburg and second-place Elk County Catholic.The Lady Dutch were led by Adair Gennocro, who placed second with a time of 19:35.Behind Gennocro for St. Marys was Kaley Williams with a time of 22:20. Gina Schneider finished with a time of 23:57. Sloan Foster was next for the Lady Dutch in 24:05. Alette Krakenes finished the race with a time of 25:23 to account for St. Marys Area scoring. Alexis Hanes finished the race in 27:39, while Ashley Mertz finished in 28:02.In the girls’ junior varsity race, Rachel Schreiber finished in 29:45, while Casey Kline finished in 30:13 and Cassie Wonderling completed the course in 31:36.St. Marys will open their dual meet season this afternoon when they travel to DuBois Area for a 4:15 p.m. meet. Johnsonburg will also be competing in this event.
