The St. Marys Golf Club will be holding an open house on Saturday to provide area residents with an opportunity to check out the pro shop and golf course, which are now open to the public. Previously the St. Marys Country Club, the club was private until late last year. With the public now invited to join, golf club employees felt that it would be a good time to hold an open house so people can check out the course and visit the pro shop.
On Saturday, golfers can play for free as long as they pay to rent a cart for nine or 18 holes. The Diamond View Restaurant will also be offering a special on pizza and wings from 2 to 7 p.m. in conjunction with the open house. The pro shop is now being managed by Wayne Bauer, who explained that the purpose of the event is to promote both the course and the facility.
"It is kind of to promote the pro shop and also to promote the golf course and see if people want to play it and if they might consider joining. The golf course is open to the public, as are some of the tournaments," Bauer said.
He noted that the pro shop will also once again be stocked with a variety of merchandise. Golfers will also be able to purchase balls, bags, hats, gloves, shoes, umbrellas, and a variety of clothing items.
Bauer also indicated that he does not initially plan to stock clubs at the pro shop.
"I'm not going to stock them, but if people need clubs or stuff other than what we already have here, we can order them. We can also order shoes. We don't have every size here, we just have shoes that people can look at and go from there," Bauer said.
The facility also has a driving range, which is also open to the general public.
In the event of inclement weather on Saturday, Bauer remarked that the event will likely be rescheduled; however, a rain date has not been determined.
