St. Marys junior baseball stars fall to Bradford 11-8

The St. Marys Little League Junior League All-Star baseball team was handed their first loss on Friday evening as they fell to Bradford 11-8 in a contest played at Memorial Park.
Kyle Williams started on the mound for St. Marys, working three and one-third innings and giving up nine hits, walking four, and striking out three. Pat Schlimm took over for one and two-thirds of an inning, giving up one hit, walking three, and striking out two. Nate DaCanal worked the final two innings.
Ryan Boyer started on the mound for Bradford, working three innings and striking out three. Andrew Peterson took over for two-thirds of an inning, giving up one hit, walking four, and striking out two. Andrew Bacha worked two innings, giving up two hits, walking four, and striking out two. John Obermeyer worked the final one and one-third innings, giving up two hits.
St. Marys had five hits in the contest, led by Brady Bauer with a triple and a single. Dalton Bauer had a double and a single, and Austin Wolfel had a double.
Bradford had 10 hits, led by Andrew Peterson with a pair of doubles and a single. Andrew Bacha and Seth Drummond each recorded a pair of singles. Alex Rinfrette had a double, and Connor Vecillio and Ryan Boyer both singled.
Bradford took an early lead with a run in the top of the first. With one out, Andrew Bacha reached base on an error, advanced to second on a single by Seth Drummond, and after another out, scored on a single by Connor Vecillio. St. Marys left one man stranded in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Ross Brennen reached base on an error, but was left at first as Dalton Bauer went down swinging.
Bradford added another pair of runs in the top of the second. With one out, Alex Jadlowic walked and later stole second. After another out, Bryce Skaggs walked, and he and Jadlowic each picked up another base on a passed ball. A single by Bacha scored both, giving Bradford a 3-0 lead. St. Marys' batters went down in order in the bottom of the inning.
Neither team scored in the third, though Bradford left the bases loaded in their half of the inning.
The Bradford squad used a strong fourth inning to push through six more runs and extend their lead even further. Alex Rinfrette led off with a double and made it to third on a single by Bacha. A single by Drummond scored Rinfrette, and then a double by Andrew Peterson scored both Bacha and Drummond. Skaggs replaced Peterson on base as a special pinch runner, and scored as Vecillio grounded out to the shortstop for the first out of the inning. Ryan Boyer walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball. John Obermyer also walked and later stole second. With Alex Colosimo up to bat, Boyer scored on an error and Obermyer advanced to third. Colosimo grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Obermyer and giving Bradford a 9-0 lead. St. Marys scored their first two runs in the bottom of the inning. Joe Nasoni led off with a walk. While Brennen was up to bat, Nasoni made it all the way to third on an error. After Brennen struck out, Dalton Bauer walked, putting runners on the corners. Bauer was replaced by special pinch runner Austin Wolfel, who later stole second. After anther out, both Nasoni and Bauer scored on a triple by Brady Bauer. DJ Mertz and Eric Gerber both walked to load the bases, but St. Marys was unable to gain any more ground as Pat Schlimm struck out to end the inning with the score 9-2 in favor of Bradford.
Bradford scored their final two runs in the top of the fifth. Rinfrette reached base on an error, picked up second on a passed ball, and tried to steal third but was thrown out by the catcher. Bacha walked, stealing second and getting to third on a passed ball. Drummond also walked, later stealing second. Both Bacha and Drummond scored on a double by Peterson, who was left stranded as the next two batters went down in order. St. Marys' batters went down in order in the home half of the inning.
Nate DaCanal took over on the mound for St. Marys in the top of the sixth, sending the batters down in order. St. Marys pushed through four more runs in the bottom of the inning. Dalton Bauer singled and Williams walked. A single by Brady Bauer scored Dalton Bauer. With one out, Gerber walked to load the bases, and Pat Schlimm walked, scoring Williams. DaCanal flied out to center, scoring both Brady Bauer and Gerber, and sending Schlimm to third. Nasoni walked to put runners on the corners, but both were left unable to advance as Brennen flied out to center. St. Marys' four runs cut Bradford's lead to 11-6.
DaCanal again sent Bradford's batters down in order in the top of the seventh, and St. Marys scored two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Dalton Bauer led off with a double. With two outs, Wolfel doubled, scoring Bauer. Gerber reached base on an error, scoring Wolfel, but that's as close as St. Marys got as Frankie Singer was out at first to end the game and give Bradford the 11-8 win.
The loss drops St. Marys into the loser's bracket of the District 10 junior league all-star tournament. St. Marys will take on Fox Township on Sunday at 4 p.m. at a site to be announced.
