St. Marys Legion defeats Kane 12-2 Sunday night

The St. Marys Legion baseball team recorded their seventh victory over the season as they handed the Kane Legion a 12-2 loss in five innings Sunday night at Berwind Park.
St. Marys scored 10 runs in the third and fourth innings to record the win.
The St. Marys squad pounded out 14 hits in the game, led by Anthony Grimone’s triple and double. Nate Geist had two doubles, while Pat Brennen and Luke Nicklas both had a double and a single. Jordan Weinzierl had three singles, while Nick Burdick doubled. Eric Wehler and Mitchell Meyer each had a single.
Mitchell Meyer started on the mound for St. Marys and worked three innings, giving up four hits, walking one and striking out four. Nate Geist worked two innings of relief, walking three and striking out two.
Kane went down in order in the top of the first inning. St. Marys scored a run when Grimone doubled and scored on a single by Weinzierl.
Kane left the bases loaded in the top half of the second inning, while St. Marys went down in order.
The top of the third found Shawn Rolick leading off with a double for Kane. Dave Swanson followed with a double, scoring Rolick. Loren Kuhmer singled to score Swanson, giving Kane the 2-1 lead. In the home half of the inning, Meyer led off with a single. He was caught stealing. Grimone followed with a triple. Brennen reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Grimone. A single by Weinzierl scored Brennen as Weinzierl went to third on an error. With two outs, Wehler reached base on an error. A double by Geist scored Weinzierl and Wehler. A double by Nicklas scored Geist. A double by Burdick scored Nicklas as St. Marys opened an 8-2 lead.
Kane left two men on base in the top of the fourth inning. In the home half of the inning, Brennen and Weinzierl led off with back-to-back singles. Brennen was erased at third on a double play. Wehler reached base on an error, scoring Weinzierl. A double by Geist scored Wehler. A single by Nicklas scored Geist as St. Marys took the 11-1 lead.
Kane went down in order in the top half of the fifth. With one out in the home half of the inning, Brennen doubled. With two outs, Jake Cortina drew a walk. A single by Wehler scored Brennen, giving St. Marys the 12-2 win with the 10-run mercy rule in effect.
St. Marys will return to action Wednesday when they play host to the Wilcox Legion.
