St. Marys Legion downs Bradford squad 10-3

The St. Marys American Legion Baseball team raised their record to 9-3 on the season with a 10-3 victory over the Bradford Legion Wednesday night at Berwind Park.
Jack Herzing went the distance on the mound for St. Marys, giving up four hits, walking six and striking out 16. Bradford used four pitchers. Noah Colbert started on the mound and worked 1 2/3 innings, giving up five hits, walking two and striking out two. Anthony Miller worked 2 1/3 innings, giving up one hit and walking six. Connor Borowski worked 2/3 of an inning, giving up five hits and striking out one. Keegan Goodliff worked 1/2 of an inning.
“I thought Jack (Herzing) threw a good game tonight,” said St. Marys manager Fran Pasi.
“Ivan Wortman had a good game at the plate, going three-for-four with six RBIs,” added Pasi.
The St. Marys squad had 11 hits, led by Wortman’s two doubles and a single and his six RBIs. Mitch Meyer had two singles, while Eric Wehler, Jack Herzing, Jake Cortina, Dan Singer, Anthony Grimone and Vincent Jacob each had one single.
The top half of the first inning saw Bradford go down in order. St. Marys left a runner stranded in their half of the inning.
Bradford came up with two runs in the top half of the second inning on two hits and an error to take the 2-0 lead. The home half of the inning saw Herzing lead off with a walk. Jake Cortina singled, as did Singer with one out to load the bases. An infield single by Grimone scored Herzing. A single by Mitch Meyer scored Cortina. With two outs, a double by Wortman cleared the bases, scoring Singer, Grimone and Meyer as St. Marys took a 5-2 lead.
Each team went in order in the third inning. Bradford left the bases loaded in the top half of the fourth inning. With two outs in the home half of the inning, Wehler reached base on an error and took second on an error. A double by Wortman scored Wehler as St. Marys led 6-2.
Bradford stranded a runner in the fifth. Ben Cortina and Singer walked to start the home half of the inning. Jacob singled to score Cortina. Mitch Meyer and Wehler both singled, with Singer scoring on Wehler’s hit. A single by Wortman scored both Meyer and Wehler as St. Marys took the 10-2 lead.
Bradford left two men on base in the top of the sixth, while St. Marys left the bases loaded in their half of the inning.
Bradford scored one run on one hit and a walk in the top of the seventh as St. Marys recorded the 10-3 victory.
St. Marys returns to action Friday night when they travel to Coudersport for a 6 p.m. game. They will close out their regular season Saturday night when they host the Smethport Legion at 7:30 p.m.
