St. Marys parks have 'ideas worth sharing'
A new project to spark creativity in the community, titled “Ideas Worth Sharing,” has begun at the parks in St. Marys. Started by Park Director Denny Posteraro, the project focuses on the children and adults in the community by keeping them entertained, increasing their knowledge in the arts and maintaining a connection with the passion for learning new things. “Usually parents sign their kids up for things,” said Posteraro. “We want to kids to go home and ask their parents to do these things because they want to.”The project started as a community service opportunity for a group of students in the National Honor Society. It has now been launched into a summer project, which Posteraro hopes to continue as part of the recreation program well into the future.Posteraro said he wants people to understand that the park is not just a place for sports and people who like them, but also a place for fun and creativity. He noted that because of the help of volunteers and parks staff, there is minimal cost to keep the program running, and the various workshops are free and open to all.One of the workshops that already took place at Memorial Park was “Crazy Concoctions.” Supervised and aided by park staffers, children created crazy concoctions such as chalk, goo, "magic munch" and ice cream.Other upcoming Ideas Worth Sharing programs are: Physical Fitness, July 1, 3 p.m.-5 p.m. at Memorial Park; Splatter Painting, July 2, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Memorial Park; and Theater, July 18-July 22, 12 p.m.-2 p.m. at Benzinger Park. Anyone interested in volunteering a small amount of time to host a workshop about something they have a passion for may contact the park office at 834-9418.
